Intra Logistik's column (from materialfluss SPEKTRUM 2019)

Intra Logistik,

After watermelon please, but not in a tank!

Dear Scheuer Andi,

I'm writing you a letter because I want to ask you something. Namely: In Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Munich, I see more and more really massive off-road vehicles driving around: Land Rovers, Toyota Land Cruisers, G-Class Mercedes - with snorkels, winches, roof tents, a battery of spare canisters on the roof, sand trays on the side, folding spades.

Men are sitting in it. Men with ties and collars, office-weathered skin, their eyes boldly fixed on the license plate of the car in front of them through their horn-rimmed glasses, determined to do anything, still relaxed, their last stay at the Klingelwiese campsite in the Westerwald in their minds and the bold smell of camping gas in their noses. Or mistresses. Blonde women in their mid-thirties with Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses and a severe ponytail, their eyes still reaching over the steering wheel, Sören-Lasse and Clara-Louisa arguing in the back seat, on their way home together from the Wassermeloni swimming school in Steglitz- when I see something like that, dear Mr. Transport Minister, I get really worried about our infrastructure. Are our roads really in such a terrible state that you can only make it to the Waldorfkindergarten Großhadern with the most extreme survival equipment? And: Are we running out of gas? Do we have to take precautions and be prepared to bivouac on the spot for longer periods of time because everything is falling apart? Good. In Cologne's rush hour, you might get such thoughts. In the past, such vehicles were only known from death-defying adventurers who tried to get from Paramaribo to Manaus to tell the rest of the world how indigenous peoples live in the Amazon who have never seena white person.

Seriously: do we need such armored boxes, which are as maneuverable as a damaged 40-foot container, on our roads? Apart from the fact that they are traffic obstructions, they leave a CO2 footprint like an overcrowded Boeing 747 on the way to Sydney. This gives me an idea: why don't you publicly suggest banning them? Firstly, it would be your first sensible suggestion, secondly , it would distract from the toll debacle and thirdly, it would distract from your completely stupid idea with which you wanted to distract from the toll debacle, namely to allow anyone who hasn't failed their driver's license to drive heavy motorcycles.
What do you mean?
