Port of Hamburg handles 58.2 million tons

Both the tense economic situation in Europe, and in Germany in particular, and the geopolitical conditions continue to have an impact on handling in the Port of Hamburg.

Despite these influences, Germany's largest seaport recorded an increase of 7.7 percent in bulk cargo handling at 19.0 million tons. General cargo throughput in the first half of the year was down 11.1 percent at 39.2 million tons. In total, the terminal operators in the Port of Hamburg handled 58.2 million tons of seaborne cargo. This is 5.8 percent less than in the same period last year. As one of the world's largest rail ports, landside handling is an important aspect. Here, the railroads were able to almost maintain the transport volume with a decrease of 2.1 percent and a tonnage of 23.1 million tons. Over the course of the first half of the year, container throughput in the Port of Hamburg also improved on a monthly basis. In June, it was 10.2 percent higher than in January. A comparison of the first two quarters shows an increase in container throughput of 4.6 percent. Growth in this period is usually around 0.6%. In total, 3.8 million TEU crossed the quayside in the first half of the year. This is a drop of 11.7 percent compared to the same period last year. In terms of container throughput on a tonne basis, the figure for the same period was 38.7 million tons (-10.8%).
