Ukraine relief fund
HHLA donates one million euros
Due to the war in Ukraine, more and more people are finding themselves in need through no fault of their own. Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is therefore setting up a relief fund of one million euros.
"We condemn the attack on Ukraine, which violates international law, in the strongest possible terms. We are deeply saddened by the senseless suffering of the population," says Angela Titzrath, Chairwoman of HHLA's Executive Board. The money from the relief fund is intended to provide humanitarian and medical support for people affected by the war, with a particular focus on the Odessa region. HHLA operates a container terminal in the Ukrainian port city. "As a long-standing employer in Odessa, we have special ties to this region and want to provide help quickly," says Titzrath.
The aid fund supplements an employee donation that was set up by the Management Board at the request of the employees. Over 60,000 euros have been collected so far, which will be used to support specific aid projects for local employees. "The HHLA family stands together. The commitment of our employees is exemplary and makes us as the Executive Board very proud," says Torben Seebold, Chief Human Resources Officer at HHLA.
The relief fund and donation campaign are part of the extensive commitment of the company and the HHLA workforce: as part of a logistically complex operation, around 120 relatives of Ukrainian HHLA employees who had decided to flee their country were brought to Hamburg, the company's headquarters, just a few days after the start of the war. Here they were quickly and unbureaucratically welcomed thanks to the overwhelming willingness of their German colleagues to help. HHLA employees provided accommodation themselves or through their network. At the same time, they are also the first point of contact and, together with Russian-Ukrainian-speaking colleagues, provide support in dealing with the authorities. HHLA has looked after a total of over 250 refugees so far.
