Storage capacity for temperature-sensitive freight
Lufthansa Cargo opens pharmaceutical centers in Munich and Chicago
After five months of construction, the new "Lufthansa Cargo Pharma Hub Munich" has been opened at Munich Airport. On almost 1000 square meters and several levels, it offers space for up to 96 pallets as well as loose freight in two different temperature ranges (+2 to +8 °C and +15 to +25 °C) and a deep-freeze cell (down to -18 °C).
"With the new pharma hub at our hub in Munich, we have created a state-of-the-art infrastructure for temperature-sensitive freight, which will guarantee our customers even higher quality when transporting their pharma shipments in the future. The coronavirus pandemic has once again demonstrated the relevance of stable supply chains and fast transportation of medicines and vaccines," explains Harald Gloy, Lufthansa Cargo Chief Operations Officer. He was joined at the opening by Ola Hansson, Lufthansa Hub CEO Munich, and Jost Lammers, Chairman of Flughafen München GmbH.
CEIV Pharma certification of the new pharmaceutical hub in Munich by the International Air Transport Association is planned for next fall. This is also the first pharmaceutical certification of the Air Transport Association at Munich Airport. The certification is a global standard that demonstrates compliance with strict criteria for the proper handling and storage of pharmaceutical shipments.
In addition to the new capacities for temperature-sensitive freight at the southern German cargo hub, Lufthansa Cargo is also expanding these in the USA. The "Lufthansa Cargo Pharma Center Chicago" at O'Hare Airport was opened there in June. Since the middle of the year, up to 54 pallets and 102 refrigerated containers have been stored on several levels in two different temperature ranges (+2 to +8 °C and +15 to 25 °C) as well as in a deep-freeze cell (down to -18 °C) on a floor area of around 750 square meters.
The majority of pharmaceutical shipments transported by Lufthansa Cargo are handled at the Frankfurt hub. The Lufthansa Cargo Pharma Hub Frankfurt was recently expanded by two thirds to 8,000 square meters in 2018. It was one of the world's first pharmaceutical refrigerated centers to be CEIV Pharma-certified. Lufthansa Cargo's global network is expected to comprise 31 CEIV Pharma-certified pharmaceutical stations by the end of 2020. This CEIV network is also being continuously expanded.
