Wagner Group: Fire protection solution for the storage of lithium-ion batteries at Kettler Alu-Rad

2nd place in category 4: Logistics and transport: Wagner implemented a customized fire protection solution for the fully automated high-bay warehouse at the new production site, in which up to 50,000 e-bikes can be packed ready for dispatch and stored with installed batteries, reducing the risk of thermal runaways as far as possible.

Together with a fire protection expert, the prevailing risks in the area to be protected were analyzed and individual protection goals were defined. At Kettler Alu-Rad, the ideal solution was developed with the help of fire tests and different distances between the goods. This consists of the OxyReduct oxygen reduction system, which largely reduces the risk of a fire starting and spreading by creating a protective atmosphere in the protected area, and the Titanus early fire detection system, which detects the source of a fire 2,000 times earlier than conventional point detectors in the event of a thermal runaway of the batteries. A defined distance between the boxes ensures that if the batteries ignite spontaneously, the fire is prevented from spreading and the extent of damage is limited. The innovation of the designed solution is that it can be used in the normal storage environment without the batteries having to be stored in appropriately designed containers. This is also the unique selling point. The fire protection solution is VdS-tested and certified.
