Signs and labels: Finsterwalder Transport & Logistik relies on ONK

Finsterwalder Transport & Logistik has strengthened its presence in southern Germany with a new logistics center in Türkheim. ONK supplied and installed more than 36,000 labels for labeling the storage spaces on shelves and the floor, as well as signs for rows of shelves and buffer spaces, and supported the conversion from 1-D barcodes to 2-D.

At the family-run company's headquarters in Türkheim near the A96, 35,000 additional Euro pallet spaces have been created in high-bay and block storage areas covering around 20,000. There is also a 1,300 m² mezzanine area available for value-added services. "Our new logistics center meets the highest safety standards with regard to stored goods and is state-of-the-art in terms of energy efficiency," explains Mischa Heidrich, Logistics Project Manager at Finsterwalder Transport & Logistik. This enables the storage of various goods with HACCP requirements, water hazard class III and goods subject to excise duty. "We use state-of-the-art IT equipment and manage the entire in-house process paperlessly. We also offer our customers a wide range of logistics services such as value-added services, display construction, set building, returns processing and many more," says Heidrich. The site is controlled from a central control station via a central warehouse management system. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, the logistics specialist has implemented warehouse labeling with labels and signs from ONK.

Conversion to data matrix

ONK produced and supplied around 33,000 storage space labels for narrow aisle shelving and 3,000 labels for wide aisle shelving. One requirement was to convert all layouts from 1-D to 2-D barcodes. ONK implemented suggestions for improvement in the existing layout and created a new one. The 12-digit storage location coordinate is now printed on all labels as a data matrix code. "By switching from 1-D to 2-D, we wanted to modernize our layouts and adapt them to the current state of the art. Secondly, the 2-D codes can be scanned more easily, even if they are not complete, e.g. if part of the code is covered or damaged," says Heidrich, explaining the advantages.

ONK has produced labels made of PP film for the narrow-aisle shelving: in yellow with a downward-pointing arrow for the 1st height positions and in white with an upward-pointing arrow for all other positions. For the storage positions in the wide aisle shelving, ONK has supplied label sets consisting of a multi-level label for the lowest crossbar and four corresponding individual labels for the levels 03 to 06 above. The barcodes of all six levels are printed on the multi-level label, including the clear text storage location designation. Each barcode has an individual background color for quick and error-free assignment of the different levels. The first and second height positions are indicated on the multi-level label with corresponding directional arrows. For the storage locations on levels 3 to 6, ONK has supplied individual labels that pick up the barcode and color code from the multi-level label on the lowest crossbar. During stocktaking, the barcode can therefore also be scanned directly at the location.

Finally, ONK supplied and installed 144 signs to mark the storage locations in the block storage area. These storage locations serve as buffer locations for incoming goods, outgoing goods and the provision of picked goods for packing.
