Automated pallet storage technology based on the modular principle

With the Dematic Standardized Automated Pallet Storage, the intralogistics specialist offers a modular system of components that can be configured according to specific customer requirements.

It consists of a racking system, storage and retrieval machines with load handling devices, software and the pre-zone. The latter includes, for example, pallet conveyors, picking stations, stations for contour measurement, weighing and storage and retrieval of pallets as well as automated guided vehicles (AGVs). As the individual components are standardized, the system can be installed and put into operation within a very short time. Thanks to its compact design and the flexibility to store the palletized goods single, double and even multiple-deep, the system makes full use of the available space. It achieves throughput rates of up to 200 pallets per hour.

"The Dematic Standardized Automated Pallet Storage works according to the modular principle. This means that it is not only quickly ready for use, but can also be individually adapted," says Mortimer von Tschirschky, Director Operational Improvement & Technical Support Central Europe at Dematic. The automation solution is suitable for storing raw materials and finished products. It provides short-term interim storage and sequencing of items for outgoing goods.

The Dematic Standardized Automated Pallet Storage can be built up to a height of 45 meters. The number of aisles can be selected as required. "The available space can be optimally utilized thanks to the compact design with high storage density, saving up to 20 percent of the space compared to a manual pallet storage system," says von Tschirschky. The individual pallets can be accessed at any time without any problems. Depending on the type of configuration, the storage and retrieval machines can transport pallets weighing up to 1.5 tons quickly and precisely, or even five tons for special designs.

Furthermore, the automated pallet warehouse can be adapted to the specific requirements of individual industries: For the food and pharmaceutical industries, it is divided into different temperature zones. Temperatures as low as minus 28 degrees Celsius can be achieved in the deep-frozen area. The system also has space for long goods and bulky goods. This makes the Dematic Standardized Automated Pallet Storage suitable for the automotive, construction, steel and furniture industries, for example. The automated material flow implies maximum safety for goods and, above all, employees. A combination with other Dematic automation solutions such as the AMCAP (Automated Mixed Case Palletizing), the Multishuttle, the AKL or the pocket sorting system is ideal.

The flexibility of the Dematic Standardized Automated Pallet Storage also comes into play in the pre-zone. Depending on the customer's requirements, different components are integrated here for picking and incoming and outgoing goods, for example. Before the pallets enter the warehouse, they are first checked for suitability and weighed fully automatically. "On the one hand, Dematic Standardized Automated Pallet Storage improves inventory management through seamless goods traceability. On the other hand, the pallets are exposed to fewer points of contact, which reduces the susceptibility to errors," says von Tschirschky.
