Logistical sophistication in Reykjavik
Innnes, the leading importer and wholesaler of high-quality food products in Iceland, has commissioned SSI Schaefer to implement a new distribution center at its Reykjavik site. The warehouse will have a total of three different temperature zones in which the company's dry, frozen and fresh goods will be stored. An innovative combination of automated and manual systems will ensure transparent goods flows, high throughputs and efficient processes.

SSI Schaefer is responsible for creating the logistics concept and the logistical implementation planning for Innnes, including visualization. In addition to an automated high-bay warehouse (HBW) and an automated small parts warehouse (AS/RS), the scope of supply and services also includes a Cuby shuttle warehouse, a fully automated storage system for cartons on trays that offers optimum space utilization. Pallet and container conveyor technology is used to transport the goods, while the logistics software WAMAS
of SSI Schäfer takes over the management of the warehouse.
The total usable area in Reykjavik is 15,055 m². Of this, the picking hall in the fresh food area takes up around 2,800 m² and the picking warehouse for the dry goods range and the frozen food area around 5,600 m². The well thought-out combination of automation and manual processes ensures the right balance. For example, the processes in the storage areas for frozen products and the dry range are handled automatically. The processes in the fresh food warehouse, on the other hand, are predominantly manual according to the person-to-goods principle.
In the warehouse for the dry goods range, a 3-aisle high-bay warehouse will offer a total of 11,300 storage locations (double-deep), which will be served quickly and safely by three energy-efficient Exyz storage and retrieval machines. In addition, a 2-aisle shuttle warehouse with 20,800 storage locations ensures dynamic processes. Four Cuby lifts and 50 Cuby single-level shuttles transport containers or cartons weighing up to 35 kg. SSI Schaefer is also installing two depalletizing and two palletizing workstations in this area of the system.
The design of the deep-freeze area is equally impressive: a 2-aisle HBW with 3,600 storage locations and a 2-aisle miniload with approx. 9,700 storage locations for the storage of trays will be available for the storage of goods at -25°C in the future. For the depalletizing and palletizing of the goods, SSI Schaefer will implement two ergonomically designed workstations according to the ergonomics@work!® concept. The well thought-out workstation solution is characterized by logical user guidance and integrated error detection. Ergonomics@work! thus enables both an increase in efficiency and quality.
For seamless processes, the storage and functional areas are directly connected to each other on three levels via pallet and tray conveyor lines. The entire distribution center is managed and controlled by the WAMAS® logistics software. Commissioning is planned for spring 2019.
