Fully automatic storage system

Daniel Schilling,

Storage system for heat pumps

Due to the high demand for heat pumps, the manufacturer of heating and air conditioning solutions Hoval is expanding production at its site in Slovakia with a fully automated storage system consisting of a pallet high-bay warehouse, conveyor technology and Autostore small parts warehouse, among other things.

The plant is being implemented by the general contractor Hörmann Intralogistics and is to be completed in two construction phases by the end of 2024. The plant in Istebné follows two current trends: On the one hand, it is already Hörmann Intralogistics' third order in the heat pump industry, which is currently experiencing an enormous upswing. Secondly, fully automated multi-solution systems are increasingly being built to optimize manual picking processes.

The storage system combines two different systems for large and small parts intralogistics. The centerpiece is a three-aisle pallet high-bay warehouse in silo design with a size of 115 meters long, 22 meters wide and 40 meters high. It will contain three automatic pallet stacker cranes, each with two double-deep telescopic forks. Another feature of the storage system is the automatic handling of system pallets as carrier pallets for finished goods.

Pallet conveyor technology as a connecting element

The pallet conveyor technology enables the connection of various functional areas, including incoming goods, the high-bay warehouse, the central picking of components for production, the storage of finished goods and outgoing goods for dispatch. The storage and retrieval capacity of the system will be around 100 pallets per hour. The complex material flow is supported by various software solutions: The system control and visualization for the storage and retrieval machines; the conveyor technology and the Autostore system receive their orders from the Hilis Warehouse Management System, which synchronizes the two automated storage areas and optimizes material flows for the combined picking workstations.

Hörmann Intralogistics is responsible for the entire project management to ensure smooth implementation. In addition, the company offers an all-round service to ensure long-term operational reliability. An Autostore system will be set up parallel to the high-bay warehouse. The grid of the intelligent cube storage system will take up around 85 square meters and offer space for 3,000 containers. Fully automated storage and picking will be handled by three "Red Line" robots via three connected conveyor ports. In addition, a service platform with a suspended crane system mounted underneath and an electric chain hoist for a combined workstation in order picking will be installed.
