Flexible WMS solutions - even for small order volumes
With the PSIwms editions Go, Flex and Pro, the contract logistics service provider RMD Logistics has succeeded in diversifying its order structure. This has opened up a new business model for the logistics company: In the new Fulfillmate department, RMD Logistics now also supports start-up companies with comparatively low order volumes. This is made possible by the PSIwms Go standard edition, which the company has successfully tested in a pilot project.
Contract logistics service provider RMD Logistics from Mainaschaff near Aschaffenburg ships around 1.2 million parcels every year. For more than 30 years, the family-run company has been offering logistics solutions for incoming goods, warehousing, order picking, shipping and returns processing. Specializing in e-commerce, merchandise and advertising materials, RMD Logistics supports around 70 customers from the B2B and B2C sectors. The requirements vary greatly: the range of items extends from bulky garden tools and trampolines to textiles, business equipment and fan articles, hairdressing supplies and contact lenses. In five logistics halls, 85,000 pallet spaces and 130,000 container spaces are available on a total floor area of 85,500 square meters in the high-bay warehouse, narrow-aisle warehouse and a shelving system.
Software standardization as a central task
RMD Logistics uses its own individual in-house solutions for order processing for individual customers, which are tailored to each client. Over time, the logistics service provider has added more and more applications to its software infrastructure, enabling it to cover increasingly complex requirements. However, as the individual solutions have a high degree of customization, they can only be applied to other customers to a limited extent; RMD Logistics has to develop new software solutions for companies with different processes. This poses a challenge in terms of the cost-benefit ratio, particularly for small companies such as start-ups or smaller online stores. In order to be able to cluster this customer group more efficiently and continue to grow in this promising segment, RMD Logistics is aiming to increasingly standardize and consolidate its software systems.
The company therefore decided to gradually replace its individual solutions with the warehouse management system from PSI Logistics. The preconfigured PSIwms editions Go, Flex and Pro enable RMD Logistics to map larger customer groups in one system. Thanks to its modular structure with the integrated click design, PSIwms can also be intuitively configured by the logistics service provider and adapted to the respective tasks of the employees. In this way, the solution combines standardization with the necessary flexibility to meet all customer projects. "In order to be able to serve a wider range of customers with different requirements, it was important for us to have a system that could be used to manage warehouses of varying complexity," explains Kerstin Bouguet, Project Manager at RMD Logistics. "From an economic point of view, it makes sense for us to cluster our customers with these editions, as this allows us to better estimate the individual project runtimes."
Various customer clusters developed
With their standardized and configurable logistics processes, the cloud-based PSIwms editions Go, Flex and Pro offer the right WMS for every customer. PSIwms Go, which RMD Logistics is using as a pilot customer, is the standard version of the PSIwms warehouse management system and covers all basic applications for successful warehouse management with over 30 preconfigured processes. With this edition, the contract logistics service provider has reached a strategically important milestone for the company's growth: RMD Logistics has now created a so-called Fulfillmate department, in which customers are supported according to a standardized concept. This department is aimed in particular at start-ups from the B2C sector with smaller order volumes. RMD Logistics can often get such customers "on board" in just two days. Before the introduction of PSIwms Go, the contract service provider had to serve this customer base with individual solutions, which was a challenge due to the low order volume. "Now the customers can be divided into different clusters via the editions, in which smaller projects in particular are bundled," explains Sabrina Nabernik, Project Manager at PSI Logistics.
Customer projects that are not suitable for the GO edition due to more complex process requirements or a broader range of articles are managed by RMD Logistics using PSIwms Flex. In addition to all the functions of the GO edition, Flex also offers the option of mapping company-specific requirements. The customers that RMD Logistics supports with this edition come from both the B2B and B2C sectors. The merchandising processing of soccer clubs and the storage and shipping of bulky goods also run via Flex.
PSIwms Pro is the most comprehensive and powerful version. It offers a tailor-made and fully individualized WMS, for example for warehouses with a high degree of automation, individual conveyor technology, pick-by-systems or individual picking dialogues. "We use the Pro edition for customers with long implementation times, with whom we have set up a complex, extensive project together," summarizes Bouguet.
Strategic partnership beneficial for both companies
A lot has happened at RMD Logistics since the introduction of the PSIwms editions in 2022. Process structures have been fully digitalized and projects can be scaled more effectively, as customers can be clustered according to their own programming effort for the respective editions. The relationship between RMD Logistics and PSI has also developed over time into a strategic partnership for both sides. "The close cooperation in day-to-day business enables continuous further development of the PSIwms editions used by RMD Logistics," explains Nabernik. In addition, RMD Logistics offers PSI programmers the opportunity to gain practical insights into warehouse processes as part of regular logistics internships. In this way, the software developer gains first-hand experience and uses this knowledge to further expand PSIwms.
