Packaging solutions for more efficiency in the warehouse

Time and space have one thing in common in the warehouse: they are scarce - and are therefore the focus when it comes to optimizing logistics processes in the warehouse. Packaging solutions to increase efficiency are often underestimated.

They not only determine how quickly ordered goods leave the warehouse - they also make a significant contribution to customer satisfaction. After all, fine wines, delicate lamps, coveted collector's items and even cosmetics need to be carefully packaged and protected from damage during transportation with paper, air cushions, foam or polystyrene. Saving money here at the wrong end may cost the shipper dearly. Returns due to damaged goods cause both additional work and additional costs.

Anyone who thinks that more filling material to better secure the goods is the right answer to this challenge is falling short. Because more filling material requires more space without automatically protecting the goods better. Much more packaging solutions are needed that can be optimally integrated into the processes in the warehouse, take up as little space as possible and intelligently protect the goods due to their nature and composition.

Well thought-out packaging reduces costs and protects goods

Paper cushions made from 100% recycled paper are an all-rounder. They are environmentally friendly, stable and malleable and can be used in a variety of ways. Unlike chips, for example, the paper pads secure products in the shipping carton in just a few simple steps, preventing them from slipping during transportation. There is no need to completely fill the cavity. This pleases the recipient, who has less effort to dispose of the filling material, but also the sender. Because less filling material also means lower costs.

About Easypack

Easypack was founded in 1992 in Hertfordshire, UK. The company offers environmentally friendly packaging systems that produce paper cushions from 100% recycled paper. The company has won the Queen's Award three times for its successful expansion. Easypack Germany is the first subsidiary of the British Easypack Ltd. and began operations in 1992. The German business was established in the summer of 1995 and Easypack GmbH, based in Soest, was founded in September. Today, Easypack has subsidiaries in Germany and France. Sales partners also supply the markets in Switzerland, Poland, the Benelux countries, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Denmark and Ireland. International customers such as Aston Martin, Forever Living and endemol have contributed to this success.

It is important that the paper pads can be individually adjusted to the required length. This ensures that they can be used in a variety of ways: For filling cavities, for positioning, for fixing or for cushioning products of different sizes and dimensions. Intelligent packaging machines such as those from Easypack therefore ensure that different lengths for the paper pads can be stored and called up as required at the touch of a button or foot pedal. If a different length is required, it can be requested manually. This allows employees to concentrate on packing the goods safely. There is no waste due to incorrectly requested paper pads.

Set up the packing station ergonomically

The packaging station itself also contributes significantly to the efficiency of processes and to reducing the number of sick people, as the example of working height shows: The ergonomic design of workstations usually focuses on the height of the work surface in relation to people. When it comes to the packing station, the working height may have to be adapted to the packages. It is important that the employee has easy access to the bottom of the package so that they can fill it comfortably. If different packages are processed or the packing station is used by different employees, it should therefore be height-adjustable. This flexibility is also important, for example, if the packing station is used for other tasks such as writing. Care must also be taken to ensure that the work process does not result in one-sided static loading of the employee.

Another important aspect is access to the material - for example cardboard boxes, enclosed documents, adhesive tape and much more. If these are stored directly on the packing table, they not only take up space - they also quickly become disorganized. Packing tables with shelves, storage areas and holders that can be arranged within easy reach and sorted according to the individual work steps can help here. If computers are to be integrated for data capture, printing delivery bills or scanning barcodes, these must also be suitably integrated into the work process.

Both aspects are taken into account in Easypack's solutions. The machines can be integrated into the packing tables and the packing tables can be adapted to the respective requirements with shelves and attachments. Another space-saving feature is the supply of several packing stations with paper pads via a conveyor belt. This solution, which is available for the Packmate and Packsolo series, helps companies to make efficient use of space in the warehouse.

Packaging machines: Less is more

Speaking of machines: Here, too, it's worth taking a closer look. Models such as the new pro series from Easypack score points in several ways: the easy-care machines are smaller than their predecessor models, are even easier to operate and work even faster thanks to new high-speed cutters, among other things. The paper pads they produce from 100% recycled paper have 80 times the volume of the original source material.

Efficiency in the warehouse is therefore not only dependent on the picking speed and the software used, but also to a large extent on the packaging process, the packaging machines and the filling material. Sophisticated solutions with individually combinable modules make a significant contribution to reducing costs and relieving the burden on employees - without compromising on the protection of the goods.
