Artificial intelligence

When Stanley Kubrick brought the monumental science fiction film "2001 - A Space Odyssey" to the big screen in 1968, it was only natural that an artificial intelligence played a leading role: HAL 9000.

But AI always remained a topic for the future, even though the basic principles by which a computer can optimize its own programming have been known for as long as HAL's red interface on board the "Discovery" has been pulsating. Until today. The hype surrounding ChatGPT has made it clear to everyone that AI is indeed here to stay. This has also been evident at trade fairs in recent weeks. Machine learning is now everywhere when it comes to real innovation. Logistics and intralogistics in particular benefit when routes are optimized automatically and in real time or the system can reliably predict the failure of components in industrial trucks from the measured values of the system.

You just have to say goodbye to the aesthetic images of a red pulsating eye that sends astronauts to their deaths with a gentle voice. Industrial AI is more sober, less dangerous and much more useful than a HAL 9000. If you read the article on real-time slot management on page 40 or the automated pallet transport at Fronius on page 44, you will get an idea of this. But you will also come across the use of artificial intelligence again and again in the articles at the beginning of this issue, which are dedicated to stacker cranes, shuttles and robotics - and the benefits it can bring to your daily work.

In the evening, of course, you can have ChatGPT write a letter to Aunt Frieda, try to beat the chess computer or watch an exciting movie about AI gone wild.

How do you use AI in your company? What are your experiences? Let's stay on topic together!
