Preparing for diesel driving bans
trans-o-flex orders 240 new special vehicles
The trans-o-flex logistics group has ordered 240 new vans, trucks and trailers, which are to be delivered and put into operation this year. The first vehicles will arrive in March.
"On the one hand, we are investing in our fleet in order to modernize it and create capacity for further shipment growth," says Wolfgang P. Albeck, CEO of the logistics service provider specializing in industry solutions, particularly for the pharmaceutical sector. "On the other hand, we are also preparing for further diesel driving bans with the current order." For this reason, only diesel drives that meet the latest emissions standards and will therefore not be affected by driving bans as things stand today have been ordered. "We would also like to use electric vehicles," adds Albeck. "But our tests last year showed that the restrictions in range, especially for the vehicles we need with temperature control, are still so great that it is currently hardly possible and uneconomical to use them in practice." Nevertheless, Albeck has set a target for this year of running the first delivery rounds with electric vehicles in the fourth quarter. These will probably be delivery vehicles without active temperature control in the cargo area.
The vehicles that have now been ordered are all thermal vehicles with a special body. Specifically, there are 150 vans (3.5-ton Mercedes-Benz vans) and 35 trucks (14-ton and 5-ton Iveco vans). These are two-chamber vehicles in which the goods can be transported in two temperature zones (2 to 8 degrees Celsius and 15 to 25 degrees Celsius). In addition, 55 thermotrailers will be procured for scheduled services (single-chamber system). All vehicles are certified to pharmaceutical standards and can therefore be used for transporting medicines immediately after delivery. According to Albeck, the total acquisition costs amount to "well over ten million euros."
