Knapp builds Korea's largest shuttle system

Together with Knapp and Doosan Logistics Solutions, Asung Daiso is building a new highly automated omnichannel logistics center in Yangju, South Korea. The facility is the largest shuttle system ever built by Knapp in South Korea.

Together with Doosan Logistics Solutions, Knapp is implementing another major project in the Korean retail sector. A highly automated omnichannel logistics center is being built in Yangju for Asung Daiso, operator of the leading Korean fixed-price retail chain. This is the eleventh Knapp project in Korea and the fourth joint project with Asung Daiso.

Asung Daiso operates around 1,000 stores and offers around 50,000 items from areas such as household, beauty, stationery and leisure. The strong growth in stationary retail and e-commerce led to the decision to build a new integrated logistics center.

Powerful infrastructure for retail and e-commerce

At the heart of the system is a 20-aisle Evo Shuttle 1D with around 140,000 storage locations. The shuttle system is supplemented by high-performance sorters for the flow rack areas, ergonomic Pick-it-Easy stations for online retail as well as conveyor and connecting lines across all levels. A batch picking concept is used for store deliveries, which consolidates large order quantities in a short space of time and delivers them sorted by type. The KiSoft WCS, KiSoft SRC and KiSoft Analytics software solutions control and monitor all material flows and ensure transparency in real time. The system should be able to process up to 50,000 e-commerce orders and more than 1.1 million items every day.

"With the new Knapp solution, we have succeeded for the first time in combining the supply of our stores and the processing of our online orders via a fully integrated solution. The high performance and scalability of the system were crucial in supporting our further growth in the long term," explains Chang In Hwan, Vice President Asung Daiso.

Knapp also sees the project as an important milestone. "With the largest Knapp shuttle system in Korea, the company is underlining its leading role in the field of smart logistics automation. The solution for Asung Daiso impressively demonstrates how powerful and flexible modern logistics solutions need to be in order to meet the increasing demands of multi-channel retail," says Sven Waldhaus, Director Sales & Engineering Asia at Knapp.
