Forklift trucks
IOFY 2016: The world's best in Hanover
Once again, there was huge jubilation at the start of CeMAT when it was announced: "And the IFOY Award goes to ...". 13 devices and solutions were in the final of the international intralogistics Oscars. BYD, Crown, Jungheinrich and SSI Schäfer won the coveted IFOY Awards in five categories and accepted the metal and glass trophies to the applause of the 350 invited guests.
The winners are traditionally a well-kept secret that even the winners are not privy to until the very end. "In the final of the world's best forklift trucks and intralogistics solutions, the candidates impressed above all with their innovations and customer benefits. In the end, victory was decided by the famous blink of an eye," said Anita Würmser, Executive Chairwoman of the IFOY jury at the awards ceremony.
Victory in the "Counter Balanced Truck up to 3.5 tons" category went to the 1.8-tonne ECB 18C electric forklift truck from BYD in a close finish. With the 80-volt lithium-ion truck, the international jury voted a Chinese brand the world's best truck of the year for the first time. The decisive factor for the decision was the overall package of the "European Chinese" in combination with the added value of the battery technology. Its iron phosphate battery is a real USP. It is exceptionally fast, can be recharged as often as required and without memory effect, thus enabling three-shift operation without any problems. All you need to do is recharge the truck during a break.
Jungheinrich was able to celebrate twice this year. The EJQ 325 won the "Special Vehicle" category, which was held for the first time in 2016. The custom-built Jungheinrich special vehicle was developed for Deutsche Bahn to pick up and separate the ICE wheelsets and the wheelset changer. The solution consists of standard components and impressed the jury above all with its precision. Such a combination is technically extremely demanding and has never before been realized in this form for industrial trucks.
THE WINNERS 2016
Category Counter Balanced Truck up to 3.5 t ECB 18C, BYD (electric)Category Warehouse Truck lowlifter RT 4020, Crown (electric)
Category Warehouse Truck highlifter EKX 516, Jungheinrich (electric)
Category Special Vehicle EJQ 325, Jungheinrich (electric)
Category Intralogistics Solution AGV Weasel, SSI Schäfer. SSI Schaefer implemented a fleet solution with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for the internal logistics of NextLevel Logistik GmbH near Schweinfurt.
The Hamburg-based company won the second IFOY in the "Warehouse Truck highlifter" category for the Jungheinrich EKX 516 80-volt high-rack stacker presented in spring 2015. The man-up truck lifts loads of up to 1,600 kg up to 17.5 meters. The decisive factor in the decision was the high degree of innovation. The modular platform concept, the lightweight design and a passive pendulum damping system, which is a first for narrow-aisle trucks, as well as the synchronous reluctance motor technology, which is also being used for the first time, set the truck apart, according to the jury. Jungheinrich has impressively raised the bar in the high-rack stacker segment with the EKX.
The newly developed Crown RT 4020 pallet truck with driver's platform was the winner in the "Warehouse Truck lowlifter" category. It is designed for demanding applications in modern logistics and lifts up to two tons. The top speed of 12.5 km/h and a chassis width of just 780 mm make it easy to maneuver in tight spaces, such as when loading and unloading trucks or storing pallets in narrow channels. The decisive factor in the jury's decision was its outstanding productivity in confined spaces. "The powerful three-phase AC drive, the compact design and the intuitive and responsive controls make the RT the perfect truck for confined and busy areas," says the statement.

SSI Schäfer won the IFOY in the Intralogistics Solution category in a highly competitive field. The Swiss company implemented a fleet solution with Weasel automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for the internal logistics of NextLevel Logistik GmbH near Schweinfurt. Whether containers, cartons, trays or other products of various sizes up to 35 kg - Weasel is responsible for all transportation tasks between the incoming goods area, the workstations, the outgoing goods area and waste disposal. In contrast to conventional AGVs, it does not require elaborate sensors or complex control systems. The flexibility and simple scalability of the solution is a major advantage for NextLevel Logistik: Weasel is not rail-bound and can therefore be integrated into existing infrastructures. The solution can grow as the business grows. In addition to the customer benefits, the lower investment costs of the AGV solution were decisive for the jury's decision. As a result, SSI Schaefer opens up completely new perspectives for the market.

The winners are selected annually by an independent jury of leading international trade journalists. The decision is based on a neutral test and a scientific innovation check. Both test series compare the finalists with their respective competitor devices The sponsor of the IFOY Award, which is under the patronage of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, is the VDMA Materials Handling and Intralogistics Association.
