Cooperation since 2016

Site with Torwegge technology is Wilo's flagship

Since 2016, Wilo, manufacturer of pumps and pump systems, has been relying on the expertise of intralogistics specialist Torwegge to modernize its production and logistics facility in Dortmund. The site is now the pump manufacturer's flagship, partly due to its conveyor technology.

Solutions from Torwegge ensure an efficient material flow between logistics and production in various systems. Some systems were specially developed and built for Wilo. The concept for optimizing the flow of goods also comes from Bielefeld.

"We have completely rethought our core concept of intralogistics at the WILO site in Dortmund. A dynamic material flow system made up of various solutions replaces a rigid technology that had reached its limits," says Uwe Eschment, Managing Director at Torwegge.

At the headquarters of the manufacturer of pumps and pump systems, there is a logistics and production facility next to the head office, the modernization of which began in 2016. Otherwise, it would not have been possible to increase production capacity in line with demand. No further increase in efficiency was possible, particularly in intralogistics. The conveyor systems between logistics and production were working at maximum capacity. Today, both areas are linked by a modern material flow system designed by TORWEGGE. "It is a high-performance and scalable solution that not only meets current market requirements, but can also be expanded if necessary," explains Eschment. Torwegge technology is installed in various systems, some of which come from other manufacturers. For example, components for the pumps are transported from the warehouse to the production lines in Euro containers on roller and belt conveyors, while finished products weighing up to two tons are transported by automated guided vehicles.

Torwegge developed and built some of the conveyor technology especially for Wilo. Prototypes were therefore initially put into operation at some points. After successful test phases, the system went into regular operation. "Intralogistics projects as complex as this one, which involve several innovations at once, are something special for us. We are very proud that our plan is working," says Eschment.

Even though the modernization of the Dortmund site has not yet been fully completed, Wilo has described the headquarters as the company's flagship since 2020. At the time, the main work had been implemented and the clear effects of the measures were visible. Eschment: "We have increased the efficiency of the material flow as desired and our client has increased its production volume." However, the cooperation between Torwegge and Wilo does not end with this success. There are still a few work steps to be completed in Dortmund and further projects are planned for the future in other plants where the flow of goods can also be optimized.

"The fact that a globally active group with 8,000 employees wants to draw on our expertise again is a real vote of confidence for us," says Eschment. For him, the collaboration with Wilo is also a development partnership that benefits both companies.
