Aberle GmbH acted as the general contractor for the conveyor technology.

Together with Dr. Reiner Haseloff, Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt, and Dr. Bernd Wiegand, Lord Mayor of Halle (Saale), eBay Enterprise officially opened its new fulfillment and logistics center in Starpark on the A14 near Halle in November 2015. The 28,000 square meter site was developed by real estate group Goodman and is primarily intended to serve leading retailers and brands as a storage, picking and shipping area for their items. "Our new facility in Halle offers retailers and brands looking to grow in the lucrative German and European e-commerce market an interesting alternative," says Tobias Hartmann, President Ebay Enterprise.

Expansion by no means ruled out

The fulfillment technology for the new logistics center was planned by Dortmund-based logistics consultant integral logistics and implemented by Aberle GmbH, Leingarten, as general contractor for the conveyor technology. In terms of space and system layout, the site is designed with options for further expansion of the warehouse and dispatch center.

The integration of eBay Enterprise and Innotrac Corporation has created one of the world's largest omnichannel commerce providers. It supports omnichannel commerce solutions, order management, store fulfillment and dropshipping, payment processing, fraud management, fulfillment, shipping and customer care.

64 picking stations for replenishment

eBay Enterprise brings supply and demand together and simplifies the business processes of retailers and brands. The new building, which has now opened, has the capacity to store more than 220,000 customer cartons. The logistics hall is divided into two separate warehouse blocks, each measuring around 4,250 square meters. Shelf racking systems are installed on a total of four storeys. For their supply and disposal, Aberle has installed a high-performance picking and dispatch conveyor system that covers all levels and connects them to the processing stations in the incoming goods and dispatch production areas. A total of 64 fully automatic, ergonomically designed picking stations are integrated into the racking systems. They support replenishment at the shelf levels and ensure route-optimized, efficient disposal of goods picked to order.

Fulfillment Center
Only 10 months passed between the start of construction and the go-live of the facility on the A 14 near Halle - the fulfillment center was inaugurated in November 2015.

A pallet rack with 8,100 storage spaces has also been set up on an area of around 4,000 square meters. The forklift-operated storage area is used to store excess quantities, auxiliary and operating materials as well as bulky goods. The diverse range of items that will be handled in the logistics center in the future was one of the major challenges for the optimal design of the conveyor technology. "In addition to the ergonomic design of the various workstations, a sophisticated solution was required to transport the geometric spectrum of classic containers, carton sizes and bags on a classic conveyor system and to cover a performance range of several thousand units per hour," explains Jens Brockhoff, Head of Project Planning and Sales New Systems at Aberle. "With the system installed at the Halle site for eBay Enterprise, there are no restrictions for product groups in the logistics center."

Repacking and returns processing at 30 stations

The incoming goods processing of pallets takes place at 56 separate workstations, while a further 30 workstations in the incoming goods area are set up for repacking processes and returns processing. The conveyor system then transports the container goods to the respective floors of the logistics system for storage. Hanging goods are stored manually using trolleys.

Consolidation and packaging area
A look at the consolidation and packaging area illustrates the importance of conveyor technology and the enormous dimensions of the system.

48 PC-guided packing stations were set up for the dispatch of single-bin orders and integrated into the conveyor system with intelligent empty bin management. High-volume orders with several containers are brought together by the conveyor system for order picking at almost 20 consolidation workstations. At these multi-bin packaging workstations, PC-guided dispatch production is supported by put-to-light technology (PtL). In addition to the material flow control and system visualization installed by Aberle, the PMSW warehouse management module from Aberle's process management system controls and manages the PtL processes.

The ready-to-ship order cartons are fed into a dynamic shipping sorter via the conveyor system.

With up to ten end points and an hourly throughput rate in the high four-digit piece count range, it already offers capacity potential for future growth. Bulky goods are packed and dispatched in a special packing area. From there, the goods are moved manually to the outgoing goods area.

"Implementing the entire project from construction to the first go-live of the system in just around 10 months was a real challenge for everyone," summarizes Ulf Bellersheim, the responsible project manager at eBay Enterprise. "Aberle, as our general contractor for the complete material flow technology and control system, proved to be a competent, experienced and very flexible partner who competently implemented many interfaces and unforeseen problems."
