A healthy dose of security
Davert, a supplier of organic food, relies on the Beumer stretch hood A packaging system for packaging palletized organic products. This covers the palletized bags, cartons and buckets with a highly stretchable stretch film, protecting them from external influences and keeping the goods securely in the stack even during sudden braking manoeuvres.
Davert GmbH has set itself the goal of continuous further development of processing methods and careful controls - from cultivation to packaging. This is where the Beumer Group comes into play. Because the finished goods such as rice, pulses and cereal products as well as sugar, dried fruit, nuts, oilseeds and sprouted seeds must be stored protected from dust and pests and transported to the drugstores and health food stores without being damaged. The system provider supplied the Beumer stretch hood A packaging system for this purpose.
On trend: healthy and sustainable
The number of consumers who attach importance to a healthy and sustainable diet is growing, not only because it tastes better and they want to do something good for themselves, but also because consumers are increasingly critical and want to know how food is produced or processed. Organic markets and health food stores in particular are providing answers to these questions.
Davert GmbH is a manufacturer and distributor of organic products. With around 150 employees, the company is based in Ascheberg in the district of Coesfeld - in the immediate vicinity of the Davert nature reserve of the same name. "With our guarantee of origin, we are committed to fair trade and long-term business relationships worldwide," says Erwin Tenbrink, Technical Director at Davert. The company advises its partners on product selection and cultivation and supports infrastructure projects. Davert relies on a multi-channel strategy for its customers: the products are sold in its own online store as well as in drugstores and natural food retailers.
Cleanliness has top priority
"In order to meet our strict quality standards, we ensure the highest level of cleanliness," explains Tenbrink. Before cereals, pulses and rice, among other things, are dispatched, they undergo a quality check. Employees inspect the raw goods and determine the necessary cleaning steps. In a mill, for example, a stream of air in the aspiration channel removes stalk residues, husks and dust from the grain. Sieves are used to separate grains of different sizes. In addition, systems screen out weed seeds and light particles such as diseased grains and sort them out. "As a preventative measure, we also use a pressure treatment system to rule out any pest infestation from the outset," reports Tenbrink. "By suddenly releasing the pressure, all storage pests such as beetles, moths or mites and their larvae and eggs are destroyed without affecting the quality of the goods in any way."
After this quality assurance process, the employees fill the goods. Depending on the store orders, the team then stacks the product units on pallets. "We have already placed a lot of emphasis on cleanliness up to this point," explains Tenbrink: "It is now important to continue this chain and to protect the products from dust and pests in our high-bay warehouse too." In addition, the units on the loading areas of the trucks must reach the retailers safely and without damage.
Reliable and powerful
Those responsible set out to find a solution. They came across the Beumer Group. The company supplied a high-performance packaging system from the Beumer stretch hood A series. "Operators can handle it very easily and safely," explains Volker Feldmeyer, sales engineer at the Beumer Group, who supported Davert with this project. "To make work easier for the maintenance staff and thus also ensure high machine availability, it does not require a platform at all." Maintenance work is carried out at floor level. Another advantage: the compact design.
A material-friendly film transport system feeds the previously cut and welded film hood to the system. The welded seam of the film hood cools down on the way to the reefing and stretching unit so that it can be reefed without any loss of time. This means that neither an energy-intensive cooling unit nor delayed cooling times are required. The pallets are thus packed more quickly. Economical motors and a reduced compressed air requirement ensure a good energy balance. The smooth surface of the transparent and highly flexible film also ensures that the palletized goods are clearly visible. "The stretch film also significantly increases transport safety," says Feldmeyer. At Davert, the Beumer stretch hood A packs the pallets for high-bay storage: The pallet base remains free for the runners of the forklift truck so that it does not damage the film. As a result, there are no annoying shreds of film during the incoming contour check in the high-bay warehouse.
Easy to operate with little effort
To control the system and enable the operator to work more ergonomically, the system provider uses the Beumer Group Human Machine Interface (HMI), an operating device with an optimized user interface and graphical navigation. "The menu navigation of the machine controller, a Siemens Simatic S7, is carried out using pictograms on the soft-touch panel," explains Feldmeyer. "The operator also has access to all the necessary training programs and content via this panel."
"We implemented this project hand in hand with the Beumer Group," says a satisfied Erwin Tenbrink. He is impressed by the excellent technical cooperation during the planning and installation of the system. An important point for him is reliable customer support, because this high-quality machine also needs maintenance and service. "If necessary, we send our service staff to check the system and make any necessary adjustments," promises Feldmeyer. "This ensures a high level of availability at all times."
