Distribution center on 20.4 hectares
Major order for Knapp in the USA
The US branch of Knapp AG has been awarded a major contract by electronics retailer Digi-Key Electronics. The 20.4-acre distribution center in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, is currently under construction. Knapp was commissioned to implement the automation technology.
Largest automation from Knapp
Knapp has been awarded the contract for the automation of order processing, the value-added service area and the storage of electronic parts at Digi-Key Electronics in the USA. Digi-Key is relying on the new shuttle generation from Knapp. The distribution center will be the largest facility that Knapp has ever equipped with automation technology. The automated warehouse and shipping operation with the OSR Shuttle Evo is scheduled to go into operation in 2021.
"Meeting growing demand"
Dave Doherty, President of Digi-Key explains: "Digi-Key's investment in automation was necessary to meet growing demand. It also reflects our ongoing commitment to our employees and our home community of Thief River Falls."
Up to 1000 shuttles in use
Initially, the OSR Shuttle Evo will store over one million individual electrical components, although the storage system is designed for much larger quantities. For example, 1.86 million items can be stored in the shuttle system alone - over 1,000 shuttles will then be in use. In total, the system is designed for a capacity of 2.7 million items. Picking takes place at goods-to-person workstations.
Support after commissioning
The automation solution will help Digi-Key to process an increasing number of orders at its headquarters in the coming years. After the installation phase, Knapp will continue to work closely with Digi-Key's management. After commissioning, resident engineers will ensure a smooth go-live and ongoing operation.
Business location strengthened
Digi-Key is thus strengthening its location at its headquarters in Thief River Falls - a not insignificant factor in the region. Digi-Key also wants the distribution center to create a clean, modern, and safe work environment for its employees. Modern break rooms, employee amenities and an open work environment were part of the design. High-tech equipment, modern environmental technology and innovative lighting systems are also intended to reduce the impact on the environment.
