Port of Hamburg and logistics

Daniel Schilling,

Challenging year - positive outlook

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) performed successfully in the 2022 financial year despite challenging conditions. Group revenue increased by 7.7 percent to EUR 1578.4 million, compared to EUR 1465.4 million in the previous year. While container throughput fell by 7.9 percent to 6,396,000 standard containers (TEU) after 69,433,000 TEU in the previous year, the transport volume remained almost constant at 1,694,000 TEU despite disruptions in the operational inflow to the German seaport terminals.

For 2023, the Port Logistics subgroup expects a moderate increase in both container throughput and container transport compared to the previous year. After the development of revenue and the operating result (EBIT) in the 2022 financial year was positively influenced by a significant increase in storage fees, revenue for the Port Logistics subgroup in the current financial year is expected to remain at the previous year's level. A slight year-on-year decline in revenue in the Container segment and a significant increase in the Intermodal segment are assumed. In addition, an operating result (EBIT) in the range of EUR 145 to 175 million is considered possible for the Port Logistics subgroup. Within this range, a sharp decline is expected in the Container segment and a moderate increase in the Intermodal segment's EBIT.

In order to further increase efficiency and capacity in the Container and Intermodal segments, investments at Group level in the range of EUR 250 to 300 million are expected for 2023. The Port Logistics subgroup will account for EUR 220 to 270 million of this amount. Investments in the Container segment will focus on the efficient use of existing terminal space in the Port of Hamburg and the expansion of foreign terminals, while the Intermodal segment will focus on expanding its own transport and handling capacities.
