Inland ports: NRW Minister President Laschet visits the port of Rotterdam

Rotterdam, 04.10.2017 - Armin Laschet, who was elected Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia at the end of June this year, visited the port of Rotterdam on his first trip abroad. The CDU politician took a tour of the Europoort and Maasvlakte area and spoke with the Port Authority's management. "We are delighted that Minister President Laschet is visiting us," says Emile Hoogsteden, Vice President and Director Container, General Cargo & Logistics at the Port of Rotterdam Authority. "It is a great honor for us to be the destination of his very first visit abroad and we also have a lot to discuss." When it comes to logistics, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rotterdam are inextricably linked, with Duisburg and the other inland ports and logistics hubs undoubtedly representing an important link for multimodal transport from and to the hinterland. In addition, both parties are confronted with the same major challenges: Energy transition and digitalization. Together, we can make even better use of the opportunities that arise in these areas and thus further strengthen the industrial-logistical axis between North Rhine-Westphalia and Rotterdam."

"Not Hamburg"At 55.7 billion euros, the Netherlands is by far North Rhine-Westphalia's most important trading partner. The city on the Meuse plays a decisive role in this. With 80 million tons, the port of Rotterdam accounts for a market share of 60 percent of all transport between Germany's most populous federal state and the seaports. Even if NRW Minister President Laschet caused a stir in his own state, the CDU politician was right when he said in his government statement on September 13, 2017: "Our seaport is not Hamburg, but Rotterdam." With this in mind, the parties today agreed to further intensify cooperation between North Rhine-Westphalia and the port of Rotterdam. In addition, both parties will work to better anchor the position of Germany's relevant seaports at federal level, including Rotterdam. red
