Implementation during ongoing operations
Siemens wins modernization contract at Munich Airport
Siemens Logistics has received an order to modernize the baggage handling system in Terminal 2 and its satellite building at Franz Josef Strauss Airport in Munich.
By integrating innovative screening devices, Siemens is helping the customer to comply with international baggage screening regulations to the highest degree and to continue to successfully manage the increasing passenger volume. The client is Terminal 2 Gesellschaft, a joint subsidiary of Munich Airport and Deutsche Lufthansa.
To upgrade to the current security regulations for baggage handling, which require explosives detection systems according to Standard 3 in accordance with the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), X-ray machines are being replaced within the baggage handling system. In addition, Siemens is implementing the latest generation of screening devices, which deliver high-resolution 3D images and thus achieve improved screening quality.
"We are pleased to be able to continue the good cooperation with the Terminal 2 company and to support Munich Airport in further increasing its efficiency and competitiveness," said Michael Reichle, CEO of Siemens Logistics. Marco Butz, authorized signatory and Head of Processes and Central Infrastructure at the Terminal 2 company, emphasized: "We always want to offer our passengers the Siemens Logistics Press Release best comfort and the highest possible level of security. For this reason, we rely on Siemens' many years of expertise to achieve the goals we have set ourselves - safe, fast and smooth baggage handling."
A particular challenge of the work is to carry it out during ongoing operations without any restrictions on regular flight operations. The measures are expected to last until mid-2022. Siemens serves 16 of the 20 largest passenger airports worldwide, which together handle a total of 1.1 billion passengers per year. In addition, the company's track record includes long-term operating and maintenance contracts with over 40 airports around the globe.
