Foundation stone laid for new office building

Intralogistics company Swisslog expands in Dortmund

Originally, a large ceremony with political and business celebrities was planned, but the ceremony turned out to be much smaller due to Covid-19: Swisslog GmbH, a member of the Augsburg-based robotics group KUKA, recently laid the foundation stone for a prestigious new office building on Bünnerhelfstrasse in Dortmund.

Representing the parties involved in this new construction project, Friedrich Jaeger as the client, investor and Managing Director of Jaeger Immobilien GmbH & Co. KG and Gerd Jennissen, Managing Director of Swisslog GmbH, attended the ceremony. The project is being planned and built by the Bochum branch of Goldbeck West GmbH.

Friedrich Jaeger explains the project: "We, Jaeger Immobilien GmbH & Co KG, are investing in the latest building technology on our existing property in the Dortmund-Dorstfeld industrial estate. With this investment, we are increasing the benefit of an existing industrial area and making the location more attractive for technology companies. We are indirectly creating and retaining know-how-intensive jobs in our city."

Gerd Jennissen emphasized the strategic importance of the new property and sent out a signal for the future: "Swisslog is expanding and is also building on the Dortmund site in the long term. As one of the leading technology companies in intralogistics, we want to further increase our innovation potential, be an attractive employer and also maintain our proximity to the Technical University."

Headquartered in Switzerland, Swisslog has had a presence in Dortmund since the early 1990s - currently mostly on Martin-Schmeißer-Weg in the immediate vicinity of the university campus and spread across several buildings. "Our company offers data and robot-controlled intralogistics solutions for the retail, pharmaceutical and food industries, among others. Customers include Nestlé, Coca-Cola, dm-drogerie markt, Ikea, Rewe and Roche, to name just a few," explains Dr. Christian Baur, CEO of Swisslog.

All expertise in one place

Back in 2018, Swisslog established a technology center for research and development as well as for demonstration and testing purposes on Bünnerhelfstrasse. The office building now under construction at the same address is the next step in bringing management, administration and technology together in terms of space. Around 330 Swisslog employees will have around three quarters of the ultra-modern floor space at their disposal, based on an open space office concept.

Ulrich Luh, Branch Manager at Goldbeck West GmbH, explains: "We are very pleased to be able to plan and build this magnificent and modern office building for the companies Jaeger and Swisslog and thus further expand our construction activities in Dortmund. Approx. 8,000 m2 of office space, a large meeting center with bistro and a parking level with approx. 2,000 m2 as an open underground car park will be created here. The building will receive DGNB Gold certification and will be completed in March 2021."

"We hope that we will be able to hold our big celebration with lots of guests at the latest when we move in," says Gerd Jennissen confidently, "which will then be appropriate to the relevance of the new location for our company."
