Order-picking technology

Robots and humans picking hand in hand

The robotics start-up Magazino presents its latest version of the picking robot TORU to the trade public. The mobile robot combines intelligent object recognition with precise gripping technology, enabling it to access individual objects with pinpoint accuracy. Interested parties can experience the robot in action at CeMAT.

Thanks to safety lasers, the TORU Cube picking robot can work in parallel with its human colleagues in the same warehouse aisle. This allows it to assist employees with less ergonomic tasks, such as picking from the upper shelves. (Photo: Magazino, test of TORU Cube at DHL, April 2016)

The new TORU Cube can not only pick books, but also larger cuboid objects - from a small paperback book to a shoe box to a heavy encyclopaedia. Picking individual items rather than just the entire load carrier opens up a whole new level of flexibility in automation and has the potential to revolutionize intralogistics. Another innovation is the mobile, removable picking rack with variable levels, in which TORU can temporarily store 15 to 20 average-sized books or other cuboid items with a total weight of up to 20 kilograms. Thanks to its safety lasers, it can not only react to obstacles in its path, but also work safely with its human colleagues in the same racking aisle.
