GLS and DPD cooperate on out-of-home parcel delivery
The parcel specialists GLS and DPD want to remain competitors, but see advantages in joint out-of-home delivery. They are planning a partner network of around 20,000 contact points by 2027.
DPD and GLS want to work together on out-of-home deliveries. The aim is for all existing parcel stores of the two companies to be able to deliver parcels from their competitor in future. They also want to set up jointly operated parcel stations. In a first step, GLS and DPD want to set up around 1,000 such stations by the end of 2025, with more to follow in the next two years.
Aiming for shorter distances for parcel customers
This is the companies' response to the growing demand for out-of-home delivery. However, the companies still only want to deliver their own parcels to doorsteps. According to their own information, DPD and GLS each operate 8,000 drop-off and pick-up points. Together with the new joint packing stations, a partner network of around 20,000 out-of-home points is to be created by 2027. "More points of contact mean shorter distances for our parcel customers and more business for our parcel store partners," explained GLS Germany CEO Achim Dünnwald.
Joint parcel stations to be located close to customers The new DPD/GLS parcel stations will be located within walking distance or just a few minutes away from consumers, it was added. This should make it even easier for customers to send and receive parcels in their everyday lives. The companies emphasized that the parcel stations are to be offered to all market participants as an open system. GLS already operates 250 parcel stations. A merger of the two companies is expressly not planned. "We are definitely competitors and will remain so," said DPD Germany CEO Karsten Schwarz.
