Claas and Hellmann expand strategic cooperation

Hellmann Worldwide Logistics is opening a new 18,000 square meter warehouse in Oelde, Westphalia, to ensure production supplies to the world's largest Claas plant in Harsewinkel.

Initially, the logistics specialist will take 9,000 square meters of warehouse space into operation, with a further 9,000 square meters to be occupied later this year following completion of the second construction phase. With this significant increase in capacity, Hellmann is responding to the continuing growth of the leading international agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas. The opening ceremony of the new warehouse, which is one of the largest Hellmann locations in Germany, was attended by the management of Claas and Hellmann as well as the mayor of the town of Oelde.

Hellmann rents the newly built procurement warehouse for components from India, Turkey and China exclusively for its long-standing customer Claas and ensures production supplies to the nearby main plant in Harsewinkel from there. In Oelde, components ranging from screws to 120 kg drum gearboxes for combine harvesters and forage harvesters are stored, packed, picked, sequenced for specific assemblies and transported to the production plant several times a day by shuttle. The new site is characterized by state-of-the-art warehouse technology and its sustainable design. For example, the logistics company operates a 9,000 m² photovoltaic system on the roof of the hall to cover part of its energy requirements.

"Hellmann has been an important and strategic partner for our European land transportation and our global air and sea freight for years. In the fall of 2018, we were able to expand our cooperation to include contract logistics by opening the site in Oelde. In addition to the initial pure warehousing activities, the range of orders has been expanded to include order picking and sequencing. This makes Hellmann an important part of our supply chain and our direct production supply, and we are delighted to be able to shape growth together at the new site in Oelde, accompanied by significant process improvements," explains Bastian Linnenbrink, Head of Supply Chain Management, Claas Self-Propelled Harvesters.

"Claas and Hellmann share a very special success story: Over the past ten years, we have continuously expanded our cooperation, so that today, in addition to contract logistics, we are also active in all other logistics areas for Claas. With the new warehouse, we will be able to build on this success in the long term in order to continue to grow together with Claas and, of course, to create and secure jobs in the region," says Volker Sauerborn, Chief Operating Officer Contract Logistics, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics.
