Cooperation for last-mile baggage automation
Vanderlande and airport operator Avinor have entered into an innovation partnership to explore ways to fully automate the last mile of the baggage handling process.
Vanderlande supplies two innovative solutions - Bagload for integrated robotic loading and Fleet Batch for the transportation of Unit Load Devices (ULD). These solutions are being tested at Oslo Gardermoen Airport in Norway. The aim of this partnership is to improve the efficiency and reliability of baggage handling.
The newly created innovation partnership will run from August 2023 to November 2024 and aims to automate a part of the baggage handling process that has remained largely unchanged for more than 50 years. Unloading baggage from the BHS into containers destined for the aircraft is still a labor-intensive and costly process. The initial development phases will take place at Vanderlande's test facilities in Veghel (Netherlands) and will include the further development and prototyping of the technologies according to the project brief.
From September 2024, the two products will be tested for three months at Oslo Airport, where Avinor has set up a special project test center. This facility is connected to the BHS so that the assessments can be carried out in a real "live" environment.
