Expert opinions on the topic of green logistics
"Global warming is a fact, raw materials are running out"
Exclusively for the materialfluss editorial team, industry experts explain how they pursue this goal with their customers in practice.
materialfluss: Does the topic of green logistics still "pull" in discussions with customers? What should logistics managers and those responsible for logistics pay particular attention to in this area?
Grimm: Global warming is a fact, raw materials are running out and there is no substitute planet at hand. In fact, most customers have realized this and are asking us for more sustainable solutions. By signing the Climate Pledge in 2021, we have set ourselves the goal of achieving a net-zero carbon footprint by 2040 - ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Among other things, we will significantly reduce emissions from production and shipping to customers. Logistics managers should demand the greatest possible transparency with regard to sustainability strategies. For example, those who label individual technologies as "green logistics" solutions are not pursuing a consistent sustainability course across the entire portfolio. Vanderlande has defined KPIs and measurable targets to make our strategy tangible and progress traceable.
mfl: Which of your company's products or services comes to mind first when you think of green logistics?
Grimm: An intralogistics provider's end-to-end sustainability strategy is the key aspect, rather than individual products. Vanderlande therefore set itself the goal years ago of making its systems 30 to 50 percent more energy efficient. With Adapto, we have already developed a highly energy-efficient shuttle system; the proven Quickstore storage and retrieval machine has now been revised for handling larger or heavier products. We have now demonstrably developed the "Greenest Miniload", currently the most sustainable SRM on the market. Further projects will follow, because Vanderlande's vision is to be the world's leading provider of sustainable automated logistics solutions.
