299 Autonomous mobile robots

Modernized logistics at Radial with AMR technology

Dematic has successfully completed the implementation of 299 Autonomous Mobile Robots for Radial Europe, an omnichannel retailer and member of the bpost Group. The intelligent machines are used in its logistics center in Groningen, the Netherlands.

With the Dematic solution, Radial has optimized its warehouse processes and expects significantly greater efficiency in order processing than before. For Dematic, this AMR order is the largest of its kind to date.

Three types of AMR

Radial uses the AMR mainly for processing e-commerce orders in the textile sector. "Our customized end-to-end solution will help Radial to increase efficiency, enhance flexibility and ensure future scalability," explains Kevin Heath, Global Sales Engineer for Robotics at Dematic.

The Dematic solution is divided into three key application areas and therefore comprises three types of AMR: firstly, pallet-to-picker robots transport the pallets from the entrance to a large storage area. From there, they are transported to the transfer stations and the racks of the picking stations at the packing stations. The same process is then reversed.

In addition, bin-to-picker AMRs store pallets in an automated high-bay warehouse and transport them to the picking stations for the execution of split-case orders, i.e. orders consisting of a large number of individual products or article variants. The racking system has a capacity of around 65,000 storage locations for this purpose. Finally, order shelf transport robots handle the transportation of orders on a multi-level rack, which are then delivered to the packing stations.

Higher overall performance

"This is a double win for Radial," says Dries De Love, Executive Vice President at Radial Europe. "The solution increases efficiency, which leads to improved services and lower costs for our customers. We also see ergonomic improvements and safety benefits for our employees. This leads to a higher overall performance."

The project at Radial in Groningen marks a milestone for Dematic, also with regard to the Kion partner Quicktron, which was commissioned by Dematic to provide the considerable number of AMRs and to implement the project. Kevin Heath from Dematic summarizes: "Through this major contract, we have established best safety practices for this innovative technology and developed a strategy for customer service and spare parts provision in the EMEA region."

In addition, the project has provided the provider of intelligent automation technology with valuable insights into the application, design and implementation of AMR systems. "We have significantly expanded our expertise, including how to apply, design and implement AMR order fulfillment systems. We now intend to further expand this division worldwide," emphasizes Heath.
