Witron relocates Mercadona dry goods warehouse
The Spanish food retailer Mercadona has commissioned Witron to implement a dry goods warehouse in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain). The two companies are thus continuing their cooperation, which began in 2004.
The general contractor has already built twelve highly automated logistics centers at five locations for Mercadona. The Mercadona stores in the north of Spain are to be supplied from the planned dry goods warehouse. The 32,000m2 facility should be ready for use from the end of the year.
Many years of cooperation
One of the core elements of the new distribution center: The OPM system, in which 16 Case Order Machines (COM) will place up to 137,000 retail units on pallets in line with store requirements. Upstream is a 32-aisle tray warehouse with 173,000 storage locations. The PSSM system (Pallet Storage and Stacking Machinery) is to pick up to 3,200 full and half pallets per day in a high-bay warehouse with 13,900 storage locations and 12 storage and retrieval machines.
The two family businesses have been cooperating on various projects since 2004: "The successful partnership between the two family businesses since 2004 is based on many common factors: A willingness to innovate, commitment, maximum customer service and short decision-making processes," says Witron Key Account Manager Alberto García Pardo.
Mercadona: currently Witron's largest customer
When the planned logistics center goes into operation, a total of 178 COM machines will pick around 1.6 million retail units for Mercadona every day. This will make Mercadona the general contractor's largest customer worldwide. "Both companies are very proud of what has been achieved together so far and are working hard to become even better in the future," says Alberto García Pardo. "Just one day after the contract was signed, the next project was already underway. The German-Spanish success story, which is probably unparalleled in the logistics sector, will continue in the future."
