Project sprint in marathon distance

The new high-bay warehouse of EMS-CHEMIE AG

As a fast-growing, independent Swiss company with global activities in the business areas of polymer materials and fine chemicals, EMS-CHEMIE AG quickly required an additional high-bay warehouse (HRL 4) for pallet conveying and warehouse logistics at its Domat / Ems site.

At the end of 2020, Stöcklin Logistik AG was commissioned as general contractor for the highest high-bay warehouse (45 meters) in Switzerland. "We always look at the overall system and were able to benefit from the experience we have gained in the realization of previous high-bay warehouses at this location and our knowledge of the maintenance and service readiness for high-bay warehouses that we have taken over since 2012. Thanks to our production at the Laufen site and the short distances in our new Technology Center at the same location, we were able to implement this marathon project at sprint speed," explained Raphael Weber, the responsible project manager at Stöcklin.

The core elements of the pallet storage system solution from Stöcklin are the two modularly designed MASTer-2042 + storage and retrieval machines for the fully automatic handling of industrial pallets up to 45 meters, a pallet transport system and pallet racks. Anti-oscillation software also compensates for dangerous swaying movements at the great height and ensures stability. Thanks to intelligent project planning, the number of lifting stations and labeling machines was reduced. This not only led to a considerable reduction in costs, but also to larger open spaces and more room for handling by forklift trucks and logistics personnel.

Throughout the entire course of the project, Stöcklin worked with the customer to synergistically coordinate the sophisticated planning, production, project coordination and implementation, pooling expertise and strengths. This enabled the perfect interplay of technology, mechanics, electrical components, hardware and software.

In a record time of just 11 months, Stöcklin fully realized the prestigious project for the customer at the Domat / Ems site. The turnkey system was handed over on time shortly before Christmas 2021 and those responsible were delighted with the speed, professionalism and flexibility of the implementation despite the pandemic conditions. This tight project sprint, under pandemic conditions, was also successful due to the regional focus. "We benefited greatly from the fact that we were able to manufacture almost everything directly at our headquarters in Laufen (including sheet metal processing) and were independent of external suppliers. This meant that corona-related supply bottlenecks, for example in steel construction, could be coordinated and resolved quickly and with commitment from a single source. The short distances within Switzerland also gave us important time advantages. We were also able to respond flexibly to additional requests within a feasible framework," summarized Stöcklin project manager Raphael Weber.

"With the new high-bay warehouse, we are rapidly expanding our shipping and storage capacity so that we can continue to supply the global markets quickly and flexibly. The project marks the start of a considerable expansion investment at the Domat/Ems site over the next five years. It is important to us that important orders are also awarded to the region," explained Magdalena Martullo-Blocher, CEO of EMS-CHEMIE AG, at the ground-breaking ceremony in March 2021.
