Expansion for more capacity
SSI Schaefer expands fashion company's logistics center
From its logistics center in Weil am Rhein, the fashion company Carhartt WIP supplies 70 of its own Carhartt WIP stores (retail) worldwide as well as eleven outlets and the B2C volume via its own online store. General contractor SSI Schaefer is increasing the site's storage capacity and process efficiency.
SSI Schaefer is building a new logistics hall for Carhartt WIP with the Cuby Shuttle system, compact container and carton conveyor technology as well as picking stations with sequence towers. In addition, the existing automated shipping buffer will be expanded and connected to the new system technology.
High throughput, expansion possible
The extension building with a floor area of more than 4,000 m² will be equipped with a fully automated 5-aisle Cuby Shuttle system, around 35,000 carton storage locations, a pre-zone and a high-speed loop. With a compact system layout, ten lifters will ensure a high throughput, and a potential expansion by three aisles has already been taken into account. Eight sequence towers sequence the source cartons and ensure a continuous material supply to the eight picking stations. Here too, an optional extension of up to four towers is already part of the concept. The picking stations are equipped with put-to-light technology and integrated into the overall system and the material flows.
1.6 kilometers of conveyor technology, AKL expanded
The newly installed conveyor technology will extend over 1.6 kilometers and serve 20 new packaging workstations, a partially automated returns workstation and eleven special handling workstations for Value Added Services (VAS), as well as connecting the material flows from the existing system. In the existing facility, SSI Schaefer is expanding the existing 8-aisle miniload by two additional aisles with 9,800 storage locations. In addition, various handling systems such as automatic carton openers and erectors, scanners, automatic closing machines and label applicators are to be integrated into the conveyor technology. SSI Schaefer is also implementing the Wamas warehouse management system in the WIP logistics center. The go-live for the expanded overall system is scheduled for the first quarter of 2020.
