TGW realizes automated warehouse for frozen food specialist
The Nordfrost Group, a specialist in deep-freeze logistics, has grown considerably in recent years and would like to expand its capacities in the Ruhr region and consolidate them at one location. A new building in Herne is to take on the function of a central hub and supply customers from the entire region.
TGW is building an automated deep-freeze warehouse for cartons and pallets. The system was designed with a small footprint in mind. A particular challenge: the interfaces between the deep-freeze temperatures and the workstations. Christoph Wolkerstorfer, CSO of TGW Logistics Group, emphasizes: "We were able to convince Nordfrost with competence in project planning as well as experience and excellent references in the deep-freeze sector. It is the first location with automated deep-freeze logistics for our customer, and more can follow if the implementation is successful." In the incoming goods department, single-item pallets are loaded and either temporarily stored in the high-bay warehouse or transported directly to the automated depalletizing system. Depending on the product, this is carried out by TGW depalletizing robots or at manual workstations. The goods are then temporarily stored in the shuttle system.
Once the orders have been received, the frozen goods are retrieved and sequenced to the work stations. The complete pallets are then automatically packed and transported to the outgoing goods area. The silo-style shuttle warehouse offers around 66,000 storage locations for trays in five aisles, while 75 energy-efficient Stingray shuttles ensure fast transportation. The system is supplemented by a six-aisle high-bay warehouse for pallets - in silo design - with more than 42,000 storage locations. Also included are eight manual workstations and a sub-WMS for the shuttle system, which is also connected to SAP. The areas of the system are connected with KingDrive and pallet conveyor technology.
