Market share 5.3 percent
Opel/Vauxhall significantly increases sales of light commercial vehicles
Opel/Vauxhall significantly increased sales of light commercial vehicles in the first quarter of 2021. In Europe, sales increased by 26 percent to 29,000 units, the market share reached 5.3 percent.
March was the best month of the quarter: while the entire European market for light commercial vehicles recovered from the downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Opel/Vauxhall benefited even more and increased its market share from 4.9 percent in the previous year to 5.3 percent. At the same time, the number of vans sold more than doubled to 12,500 units.
From January to March, Opel and Vauxhall also performed remarkably well in their respective home markets: Opel's share of the German market for light commercial vehicles rose to 6.2 percent (+0.2 percentage points), while Vauxhall's share in the UK increased to 9.8 percent (+0.3 percentage points).
One reason for this success is the rapid electrification of the entire LCV portfolio: In the first quarter, the Vivaro-e was the best-selling battery electric vehicle in its segment in Europe. "Combo, Vivaro and Movano: by the end of this year, our entire award-winning portfolio of light commercial vehicles will be electrified. This will give us further impetus and help us to increase our sales even more," said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller.
As part of its export offensive, Opel is also expanding its business with light commercial vehicles in non-European markets. Thanks to the rapid increase in sales in key export markets such as Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and Morocco, Opel tripled its international sales volume in the first quarter of the year. This upward trend is expected to continue, as the brand with the Blitz will bring its commercial vehicles to several more markets in the coming months, including Ecuador, Colombia, Tunisia and La Réunion.
