Utility vehicles: Lidl and pfenning logistics declare war on the "blind spot"

Gera, 17.08.2017 - The food retailer Lidl and the logistics company pfenning logistics are setting an example for road safety on Thuringia's roads in Gera. On the premises of the Lidl central warehouse in Gera, the companies have opened a "mirror parking area" where truck drivers can adjust the mirrors on their vehicles.

"We want to ensure the greatest possible safety when delivering to our stores and help to prevent accidents," says Michael Thalmann, Lidl's operations manager in Gera.

Together with one of Germany's largest retail logistics companies, pfenning logistics, the discounter is declaring war on the "blind spot" of trucks. Every day, pfenning logistics alone delivers several hundred pallets of the discounter's various product groups to the 106 branches of the Lidl logistics site in Gera. With the many kilometers that pfenning logistics covers for Lidl every day, safety and reliability have top priority.

"Our well-trained drivers bear a great deal of responsibility for their job, as they usually have to maneuver with centimetre precision in busy inner-city areas. Of course, this is easier with correctly adjusted mirrors," says Manuel Pfenning, authorized signatory of the logistics company.

"We welcome the commitment of Lidl and pfenning logistics," says the Deputy Mayor of Gera, Claudia Baumgartner. "Both companies play an important role as employers in our region and are demonstrating social responsibility with this campaign."

Restricted visibility is still a frequent cause of road accidents involving trucks. A mirror parking space consists of parking space markings that are divided into different fields. Each field corresponds to one of the mirrors on the truck.

"The mirror parking area in Gera not only creates another opportunity to check the correct adjustment of vehicle mirrors, but also makes road users more aware of the problem of blind spots when driving motor vehicles," says Holger Schulz, Head of Traffic at the Thuringian State Police Directorate.

In the coming weeks, pfenning logistics will be opening mirror parking spaces at three more locations throughout Germany.
