Cooperation continued
Witron implements logistics center for Mercadona
Witron and Spanish food retailer Mercadona are continuing their collaboration. The general contractor has been commissioned to implement a dry goods warehouse in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain).
Witron has already implemented twelve highly automated logistics centers at five locations for Mercadona. At the end of April last year, the two companies signed a contract for another major project - a new dry goods logistics center in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. The Mercadona stores in the north of Spain are to be supplied from this center. The 32,000m2 facility should be ready for use by the end of the year. Most recently, Witron built a fully automated deep-freeze logistics center for Mercadona - also at the Vitoria-Gasteiz site. Here, goods for 128 stores are stored and picked at minus 23 degrees Celsius using the Witron OPM (Order Picking Machinery) solution.
16 case order machines, 32-aisle tray warehouse
The OPM system of the new dry goods warehouse is also one of the core elements of the new distribution center in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The system will supply the same 128 stores with up to 4,600 additional items. Up to 137,000 retail units will be placed on pallets by 16 Case Order Machines (COM) for each store. A 32-aisle tray warehouse with 173,000 storage locations is located upstream. The PSSM system (Pallet Storage and Stacking Machinery) will pick 3,200 full and half pallets per day in a high-bay warehouse with 13,900 storage locations and 12 storage and retrieval machines.
Partnership since 2004
The two companies have been working together for many years: "The successful partnership between the two family-run companies since 2004 is based on many common factors: Innovative spirit, commitment, maximum customer service and short decision-making processes," says Witron Key Account Manager Alberto García Pardo, responsible for sales of Witron logistics systems in Spain. "Both companies are very proud of what they have achieved together so far and are working hard to become even better in the future," says Alberto García Pardo. "Just one day after the contract was signed, the next project was already underway. The German-Spanish success story, which is probably unparalleled in the logistics sector, will continue in the future," says Alberto García Pardo optimistically.
