Traversing system saves space
Moving 750 tons of wood - at the touch of a button
In order to improve the availability of goods and create more space for a wider range of products, the South Tyrolean timber wholesaler Karl Pichler has modernized its warehouse with a traversing system from OHRA. It now offers space for storing 130 truckloads of wooden panels. Each of the four double racks has a storage capacity of up to 750 tons.
The assembly of the shelves on mobile carts enables particularly space-saving storage and yet quick and product-friendly access to the stored items. Karl Pichler serves the South Tyrol, Trentino and North Tyrol markets from four locations. The product range includes wood and wood-based materials as well as wooden floors, decking and façade solutions. Previously, the goods were stored on standard shelves. However, they no longer offered enough space for the growing product range. In addition, the stock of individual items was to be increased to ensure even better availability of the goods.
Fast access, aisles saved
Karl Pichler AG therefore decided to replace the old storage system with a fully automatic traversing system from OHRA. In contrast to racking systems that are bolted to the floor, this storage system only requires a single operation to reach all storage locations. It only opens between two rows of shelves to be accessed. This means that Karl Pichler can dispense with unproductive storage aisles and still access the goods quickly and gently.
Strong profiles for high load capacity
OHRA equipped the warehouse with four double-sided cantilever racks mounted on mobile carriages, with an additional single-sided cantilever rack installed at each end of the warehouse - these form the frame of the mobile racking system, so to speak. Each of the mobile racks is 34 meters long and almost eleven meters high. In order to achieve the high load capacities required, each of the 35 rack uprights is constructed from 450 IPE profiles - the strongest profiles in the OHRA range. They enable a load capacity of up to 19.2 tons on 13 storage levels. In total, each movable rack row offers a storage capacity of 750 tons - with a total empty weight of the racking system of 720 tons. With the new racking system, Karl Pichler's customers can access a wider range of goods in less time - and with the same floor space as before.
About Ohra
The history of OHRA Regalanlagen GmbH began in 1979: Ottokar Hölscher founded a company for the manufacture and sale of shelving systems. The German company quickly established itself on the market, particularly thanks to its innovative cantilever racking: In contrast to the competition, the arms of the cantilever racking are simply hooked into the punched upright profiles - this patented solution means that the cantilevers can be adjusted at any time and without tools. Just like the cantilever racking, the pallet racking is made from full-wall, hot-rolled steel profiles and is therefore characterized by its high load-bearing capacity, robustness and durability. In 2019, the company celebrates its 40th anniversary. OHRA is now represented in 13 countries with its own sales offices.
