Go-live for Häfele's new high-bay warehouse
Following the successful installation of the storage and retrieval machines in August 2021, Häfele put the new high-bay warehouse into operation together with io.
Sibylle Thierer, Häfele company manager, officially opened the new and fourth high-bay warehouse at the logistics center in Nagold with a ceremonial naming of the storage and retrieval machines. io was also on site as a long-standing planning partner. The world's leading technical consulting and planning company has been working with Häfele, the international specialist for fittings technology, electronic locking systems and lighting, to plan and implement its future logistics since 2018. In line with a holistic general planning consulting approach, io is providing support in the areas of logistics, IT, construction and project management.
Important milestone reached
The construction of the new high-bay warehouse and the associated plant expansion enabled the existing logistics to be expanded and modernized. "The go-live of the high-bay warehouse is an important milestone in our logistics strategy. Despite the uncertain delivery times and rising costs since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, we managed to complete the project on time and within budget. io is an important and reliable partner for us here," says Matthias Wehle, Head of Logistics at Häfele. The high-bay warehouse with around 15,000 storage locations and 7 aisles has shortened walking distances and made workstations more ergonomic.
In this area of the warehouse, picking is carried out according to the goods-to-person principle. In addition, "put-to-light" and "ProGlove scanners" are used. The workstations are connected to the high-bay warehouse by a high-performance electric floor conveyor. In the incoming goods extension, the pallet conveyor technology was designed to allow flexible storage in both the new and existing warehouses. All measures were carried out during ongoing operations without impairing Häfele's ability to deliver, which in turn was ensured by detailed migration planning.
Against this backdrop, the last few months have been one of the most exciting stages of the project. The installation of the conveyor technology and the planned electric floor conveyor were completed and integrated into the existing building. The entire system has now been commissioned. Additional expansion of the storage and conveyor technology as well as the picking workstations is possible at any time.
The dispatch center in Nagold was built in 1974 and continuously expanded and automated in the years that followed. Today, it consists of several automated high-bay warehouses and other manual storage areas with a total of more than 100,000 storage locations.
