Shuttle systems
Shuttles - indispensable partners in the modern warehouse
Market trends such as omnichannel distribution, short order throughput times and delivery cycles, the handling of a wide variety of product ranges, as well as complex material flows and the need for compact and highly dynamic storage all place demands on intralogistics. Shuttle systems are a key component in the cost-optimized logistics chain.
Wherever optimized warehousing with fast material transport and short access times is required, shuttle systems have a special role to play. Above all, flexibility in terms of capacity and high performance are decisive. SSI Schaefer has a wide range of single or multi-level shuttle systems.
Efficient solutions for the storage of
pallets and large load carriers
Productivity requirements in the beverage industry have increased significantly in recent years. A growing variety of products and constant innovations in packaging as well as the trend towards disposable containers often make handling in conventional block warehouses uneconomical. The need for efficient, flexible solutions is therefore growing. SSI Schaefer created a distribution center with SAP EWM material flow control for Capri Sun GmbH. The centerpiece is the 3D-Matrix Solution. The Schäfer Lift&Run (SLR) system used with the SSI Orbiter LHD load handling device continues the matrix concept for pallet handling. With the SLR system, SSI Schaefer offers what the company describes as a particularly economical solution for the dynamic handling of pallets in channel storage. The SLR storage device consists of a transfer carriage with lifting device for the autonomous load handling device SSI Orbiter LHD. The SLR runs on two rails and does not require an upper guide rail. The devices can be used one above the other. The pallets are supplied and removed via vertical lifts. Together, the SLR and the lifts form the SLR system, which can be used to increase storage capacity. The design of the matrix solution means that the storage cube is treated as a system that is open on all sides - bottlenecks are avoided. The matrix consists of three main components: shuttle vehicles, lifts and conveyor systems. The means of transportation can be moved separately and in parallel. Dynamics, low space requirements and low energy consumption make the shuttle system an alternative to the classic pallet SRM for many applications.
High handling capacity and time savings
SSI Schaefer also offers a dynamic, modular and scalable multi-level shuttle system for large load carriers: The Schaefer Tray System (STS) ensures efficient storage of pallet layers in the rack with minimal free space as well as the picking of individual packaging units. The warehouse can be used efficiently with several STS vehicles arranged one above the other. Two load handling attachments with a pulling device are installed on each vehicle. This results in short load cycles and minimal space requirements in the racking. Typically, the trays are provided via STS lifts on transfer stations in the racking. Thanks to the strategic arrangement of the individual components, the system enables highly available and efficient use. It also achieves high throughput rates.
Scalable systems for dynamic small parts storage
Efficiency, flexibility and future viability through scalability are requirements when investing in dynamic system technology. This is why SSI Schaefer offers dynamic shuttle systems for small parts storage in addition to shuttle systems for large load carriers. The Navette multi-level shuttle, which can be scaled according to customer requirements, and the complete system based on it increase efficiency in the storage and picking of trays, bins or cartons in fully automated warehouses. High throughput rates are possible in conjunction with the 3D-Matrix Solution. Navette lifters act as a link between the conveyor technology and the Navette travel levels and can be freely selected in terms of their positioning and number in the storage aisle. The Navette is integrated into the steel structure of the storage aisles of the miniload and serves up to eight storage levels as a single component - two of them in parallel. A striking design feature is the equipment with two load handling devices arranged one above the other. In total, the Navette moves four transport units simultaneously with one load cycle, allowing storage locations on two storage levels to be served in a single operation. In this way, unlike single-level shuttles, the Navette achieves real double cycles during operation. This minimizes travel times and doubles process efficiency. This multi-level technology enables access to a wide range of articles within one aisle. Among others, the Finnish department store chain Stockmann relies on the advantages of the Navette. In order to efficiently manage seasonal peaks and enable further growth, Stockmann has overhauled its logistics in recent years and geared it towards omnichannel distribution. The core of the strategy is the distribution center in Tuusula. SSI Schaefer acted as general contractor for the intralogistics. The central element of the system concept at Stockmann is a Navette shuttle warehouse with 130,500 container storage locations for double-deep storage.
Intelligent and custom-fit solutions for high throughputs
The shuttle portfolio is rounded off by single-level shuttle systems such as the Cuby. The system solution consists of a rack, lifter, one shuttle per storage level, a shuttle crane at the rear, the maintenance platforms as well as the control system and warehouse software. A scalable lifter system with double-decker function ensures high performance and compact system layouts. The Cuby offers high energy and cost efficiency with attractive performance thanks to good space utilization through double-deep storage in conjunction with single-deep shuttle aisles and a modular design. The new SSI Flexi Shuttle is designed as a solution for space-optimized storage of cartons, trays and cubic and conical containers. Consisting of a shuttle, lifter and racking system, the design enables tailored system concepts with efficient space utilization and high throughput rates with a high degree of flexibility. Thanks to the universal load handling device with width adjustment, the SSI Flexi Shuttle allows single, double and multiple-deep storage of a wide range of transport units and dimensions, even under deep-freeze conditions. A special feature is the rack concept with adaptable storage space sizes. This enables flexibility over the service life of the system with a high storage density. By dispensing with permanently assigned x-storage positions, the shelving design enables space-optimized shelf allocation with maximum storage density, even at high storage densities.
