Hermann Grewer celebrates his 80th birthday
Hermann Grewer, Honorary Chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalia Transport and Logistics Association (VVWL) and Honorary President of the German Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal Association (BGL), celebrated his 80th birthday on June 6.
The recipient of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st Class, has been involved in the areas of transportation and traffic at a national and international level for many years. Particularly noteworthy in this context are the promotion of training and further education in the transport logistics industry, the improvement of working conditions for drivers, but also the co-founding of the Logistics Alliance Germany, which aims to raise Germany's profile as a logistics location in the world. In addition, he played a key role in the planning of an ecologically and economically compatible further development of the truck toll and campaigned for sustainable fuels and vehicle concepts in the truck sector. Grewer was born in Braunschweig in 1943, studied mechanical engineering at the universities of Munich and Karlsruhe and, after the death of his father, joined his parents' transport company, which he took over in 1969 and developed into a major medium-sized provider of transport logistics services in the field of technical gases.
He became involved with his fellow entrepreneurs at an early stage. His many voluntary activities subsequently led him to the highest offices in national and international association committees. For example, he held the office of BGL President for 17 years until October 2012 and was President of Section II (commercial freight transport) and Vice President of the International Road Freight and Passenger Union (IRU) from 1997 to 2003. In 1984, Hermann Grewer was appointed to the board of the former Fachvereinigung Güterfernverkehr in the former Verband für das Verkehrsgewerbe Westfalen-Lippe e.V. (Westphalia-Lippe Transport Association). In 1989, he took over the chairmanship of the association. In the same year, Hermann Grewer was elected Deputy Chairman of the Verband für das Verkehrsgewerbe Westfalen-Lippe e.V., and in 1996 he was elected Chairman. In 2013, he was inducted into the Logistics Hall of Fame for his lifetime achievements in European road transport.
