Ever Ace is in da house
Largest container ship in the world makes a guest appearance in Hamburg
On September 8, the megamax container ship Ever Ace called at the Port of Hamburg for the first time at around 7 p.m. on the evening high tide.
With a slot capacity of 23,992 TEU, the Ever Ace is currently the largest container ship in the world. With a length of 400 m and a width of 61.5 m, the megacarrier can hold 28 TEU more than its predecessor "HMM Algeciras".
The Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine had the mega ship built at the South Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries. The Ever Ace left the shipyard at the end of July bound for Qingdao. The shipyard will build a further five ships of this type.
Ever Ace can use first stage of fairway adjustment
"The arrival of the world's largest container ship, the Ever Ace, shows impressively that the Port of Hamburg has done its homework. Especially with the adjustment of the fairway and the widening of the meeting box, the largest container ships with more containers can call at and leave the Port of Hamburg more safely. This means that the Port of Hamburg remains an attractive hub in Europe," says Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.
The release of the new draughts by the nautical departments of Hamburg and the federal government will take place in two stages. During the first stage currently in force, container ships will already be able to utilize around 50 percent of the draught improvements resulting from the fairway adjustment. Depending on the size class, draughts will increase by 0.3 m to 0.9 m. Final approval is expected by the end of the year.
Regular guest in Hamburg
The Ever Ace is deployed between Northern Europe and Asia. The container ship sails on the Ocean Alliance's NEU6 route, which Evergreen operates under the name China-Europe-Mediterranean Service (CEM). The rotation includes calls at Hamburg, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Colombo, Tanjung Pelepas, Kaohsiung, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Taipei, Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Rotterdam, Felixstowe and Hamburg.
On its maiden voyage, the Ever Ace already set a record for the volume of 20-foot standard containers (TEU) transported on the route from Asia to Europe. According to the industry service Alphaliner, the mega-ship transported a container volume of 21,718 TEU. The Ever Ace thus surpassed the old mark set by CMA CGM Jacques Saadé by 285 containers.
