The Dutch bank ABN AMRO, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Samsung SDS - the logistics and IT arm of Samsung - have joined forces as cooperation partners to launch a blockchain-based pilot project. The project aims to simplify the transportation, tracking and financing of goods and services.

The pilot project, which will start in January 2019, will focus on the multimodal transportation of a container from an Asian production site to a site in the Netherlands. The three partners will carry out the project, but participation in the cooperation association will also be open to other parties afterwards. "At the moment, the payment of services and goods, the scheduling of containers and their physical transport are still almost completely separate cycles," explains Paul Smits, Chief Financial Officer at the Port of Rotterdam Authority and responsible for the Port of Rotterdam Authority's digitization initiatives. "Because many parties are involved and all processes are handled using paper documents, there are delays and inefficiencies."
