"A sign for more sustainability"
Logistics service provider Elsen invests in LNG trucks
As an alternative to electric-powered trucks, the Elsen Group has purchased two Iveco trucks with natural gas drives for its fleet. The LNG trucks are now on the road for various customers throughout Germany. With this pilot project, the logistics service provider wants to set an example for more sustainability within the Transport Solutions division. If the project is successful, further LNG trucks will be added to the fleet next year.
"After intensive discussions with our customers and in view of the prospective expansion of the LNG filling station network, we decided to invest in the new technology," says André Daus, Vice President and Managing Director Transport at the Elsen Group. When planning the pilot project, the requirements and wishes of the customers also had to be taken into account. The gas trucks can pull the required payload and do not have long downtimes due to the short refueling process. "We have already had our first positive experiences during our test phase in February," says Daus.
The trucks, which have a range of around 1,500 kilometers, are deployed on scheduled routes within Germany and transport commercial and industrial goods. The dispatching department at the Elsen site in Ludwigsfelde uses the vehicles so that they can refuel at the LNG filling station in Grünheide near Fürstenwalde in Brandenburg. Maintenance is carried out by the manufacturer IVECO at the Potsdam site.
In a training course at the beginning of March, around ten drivers at the Elsen site in Wittlich were familiarized with the refuelling process, among other things, by selected petrol station operators. "The briefing ensured that we have a pool of qualified drivers to guarantee a smooth transition," explains Daus.
The phased truck plan envisages a further replacement of the fleet in 2020. If everything goes well, and taking into account legal funding opportunities, Elsen plans to purchase more gas-powered trucks next year. "The investment is an important step towards sustainability," says Daus. "We would also like to continue working on alternative drives in order to realize projects of this kind together with clients." The first two tractor units will be on the road at the beginning of April.
