Gebrüder Weiss puts further photovoltaic systems into operation
The international logistics company Gebrüder Weiss has commissioned four new photovoltaic systems in southern Germany and Vorarlberg to generate its own electricity. These are installed at the logistics terminals in Nuremberg, Esslingen, Aldingen and Lauterach (Vorarlberg) and together generate around 1,540 megawatt hours (MWh) of solar power per year. This corresponds to the average consumption of 385 three-person households in Austria over the same period.
"Gebrüder Weiss has set itself the goal of beingCO2-neutral by 2030. Equipping our locations with photovoltaic systems to generate solar power is an important step in this direction," says Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss. In the second half of the year, five more Gebrüder Weiss branches in Austria will be equipped with solar systems. By the end of 2021, the logistics company will thus produce a total of 8.4 gigawatt hours of electricity (GWh) at a total of 13 locations and save around 1,050 tonsof CO2 annually.
The construction of photovoltaic systems is just one pillar of Gebrüder Weiss' sustainability strategy. The logistics company also maintains its own wind farm and is driving forward the testing of alternative drive technologies for its vehicle fleet. Since the beginning of the year, the first hydrogen truck has been added to the Gebrüder Weiss vehicle fleet, which already includes several gas-powered trucks and fully electric motor vehicles.
