Even more solar energy at Gebrüder Weiss

The logistics company Gebrüder Weiss is now also relying on sustainably generated electricity in Lower Austria. A new solar plant at the Pöchlarn site produces a total of around 1,725 megawatt hours (MWh) per year on a total area of 16,000 square meters. The majority of the photovoltaic modules on the roofs of the branch have been leased to investors from the energy sector.

The logistics company uses 462 solar modules itself to generate around 130,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of solar power per year for its own use on an area of 786 square meters. This corresponds to a supply capacity of around 26 four-person households and a CO2 saving of around 76 tons per year. Gebrüder Weiss Pöchlarn covers around a quarter of its daily energy requirements with this amount of electricity. "We naturally want to use the new energy source as optimally as possible within the company. That's why, for example, we will be charging our industrial trucks during the day instead of at night," says Bernhard Schartmüller, Branch Manager at Gebrüder Weiss Pöchlarn.

After two and a half months of construction, the fifth solar plant at a Gebrüder Weiss location in Austria was connected to the grid. Electricity is also produced using solar energy in Kennelbach (Vorarlberg), Maria Saal (Carinthia) and Wels (Upper Austria), while in Maria Lanzendorf near Vienna the roofs of the handling and logistics warehouses are rented to a solar energy company. There are two further plants in Memmingen (Bavaria) in southern Germany.

Across the Group, around 784,000 kWh of electricity per year is generated sustainably for the company's own use, with the total output of the systems amounting to around 5,200 MWh. The investment in photovoltaic technology is one of many measures taken by the logistics company to reduce its CO2 emissions and make a contribution to environmental protection.
