Partial completion at the end of 2019
Woolworth builds giant warehouse in Unna
On an area the size of 25 soccer pitches, a company headquarters of superlatives is being built for Woolworth GmbH in the Unna/Kamen industrial estate. The new building consists of a central logistics complex with five warehouse bays for Germany-wide shipping and a solitary five-storey administration building as well as associated outdoor facilities. The client, Arandano Grundstückverwaltungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. Vermietungs KG, commissioned DÄLKEN Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH with the general planning for the ambitious large-scale project at the beginning of 2018.
The new central logistics complex is located to the southwest of the administration building. Due to the overall dimensions of 360 x 138 m, the halls have a restrained façade concept made of anthracite-coloured isopanels, which harmonize with the light grey of the exposed concrete surfaces on the outside. On both long sides, 87 integrated loading bridges serve the immense flow of goods for the approx. 37,900 pallet spaces and approx. 34,300 containers in the automated small parts warehouse in the logistics area. The five-bay hall with a floor area of 10,000m2 per hall wing is designed as a solid construction made of reinforced concrete F90. The floor slab and foundations required 2,300 truckloads of concrete. In addition, 2,600 prefabricated concrete parts for the hall construction, equivalent to around 2,000 truckloads, as well as thousands of tons of other building materials for the roof and interior construction.
The individual hall wings are separated by fire walls. Pallet transportation of the up to 12 m high rows of racking is controlled by pallet trucks and reach trucks as well as two goods elevators. On the long sides of the halls, there are several mezzanine areas with a depth of 12 m on the inside above the loading bridges at a height of 6 m. On the east side, there is a two-storey area for the flow of incoming goods, technical rooms and escape and stairwells. The second mezzanine area on the west side includes the outgoing goods and picking offices, a waste station and stairwells. In addition, social rooms and complex sanitary facilities provide a high level of comfort for logistics employees and long-distance drivers working in shifts.
Completion of the first three bays is scheduled for the end of 2019. The other two hall wings of the logistics complex will follow in spring 2020, before the inauguration of the new Woolworth headquarters is celebrated with the handover of the administration in summer 2020. After almost 2 years of construction, a total of around 1000 employees will be able to start work
