Roof work stand with zero gap

Katja Preydel,

Working platform for safe access to train roof areas

SWEG Südwestdeutsche Landesverkehrs-GmbH is a transport company headquartered in Lahr (Black Forest). It plays an important role in local public and freight transport in southwest Germany. Around 470 buses, 180 rail vehicles and 6 diesel locomotives for freight transport are maintained and repaired in several depots.

KRAUSE has developed a roof working platform with zero gap for the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn transport company of SWEG in Gammertingen. It was adapted exclusively for "Lint 54" trains of the 622 series. This offers SWEG employees safe access to the roof areas of the trains, especially for maintenance of the air conditioning systems. The access technology specialists' solution reduces downtimes enormously while significantly improving ergonomics and safety in the workplace.

Maximum usable area

The 55 m long roof work stand runs through two maintenance halls, which are connected by a breakthrough. Due to this narrow passage, the construction had to be adapted to the existing space with centimeter precision. To achieve this, the entire hall was measured using a 3D scanner. This allows special solutions to be integrated into existing hall constructions with limited space and special conditions (support posts, machines or systems). Based on this measurement, the KRAUSE designers effectively used every available centimeter. In this way, they achieved the maximum usable area of the work platform and ensured the accuracy of fit.

The trains enter from one side. The working platform can be raised electronically at the front and rear to allow the trains to enter. The extensions each consist of twelve meter long elements. Once the train has reached its final parking position, they can be docked onto the train body using retractable hand cranks. The built-in impact protection protects the paintwork and allows the roof working area to be connected directly to the vehicles. Integrated protective grids on the height adjustment and support posts ensure the safety of employees and prevent possible damage from industrial trucks.

The use of the roof work platform significantly increases the effectiveness of maintenance work. The roof area of the entire train can be reached using a work platform. This completely eliminates the need for permanent repositioning of alternative access points, saving time and costs. The work is easier to manage and the number of ascents and descents is reduced to a minimum. Furthermore, the KRAUSE solution significantly increases occupational safety, which is reflected in less downtime for employees. In this way, SWEG also optimizes the overall performance of the maintenance stand.

Due to its design, the overall width of the roof work stand only allows a working area of one meter when the extensions are retracted. It was therefore decided to install four storage balconies for tools, materials and spare parts. These were installed on both sides of the work area and serve as a storage surface during the train change. This approach eliminates the need to carry work materials up and down. By focusing on one train model, the employees are protected in the area of the joint between the two railcars with a permanently installed railing. With the practical KRAUSE modular design, the roof work stand can be converted quickly and easily. This makes it possible to maintain an additional or new train model in the future.

Safety during ascent and descent

The two centrally positioned access steps were equipped with R13 anti-slip grating steps and fitted with an access guard. Two emergency ladders at the ends of the roof work platform provide additional safety for employees. The platform decking on the roof working platform is made of grooved aluminum, the extensions are made of aluminum hot-rolled sheet. In general, all step and platform coverings can always be adapted to the customer's requirements. The work surface was equipped with power and compressed air connections, and additional lamps below the work surface provide sufficient illumination of the workplace. A signaling system supports the train drivers when the trains arrive.
