Media transport system for the Freiburg University Library

Freiburg University Library is one of the largest academic libraries in Germany. Gilgen Logistics was commissioned to supply an automatic book and media conveyor system. The RFID-controlled book and media conveyor system connects the stacks with the circulation, book return and mailroom areas. The media are returned by the users at the four automatic return machines. The individual media are transported via a vertical conveyor to the sorting system on the first basement floor. This sorts the media fully automatically into the ten target areas of the library. Once the media have been sorted, the filled transport containers are transported directly to the two autonomous main elevators. These transport the bins to the nine floors of the library. Once all the destination stations of the elevators are full, the bins are temporarily stored in the full bin storage area. This can hold up to 110 bins. If a destination station becomes free, the bins are sent out of the buffer and transported to their destination. Trial operation began in July 2015. During the first few months, the complex building technology was adapted to the real conditions of use and further optimized in terms of energy efficiency. The official opening took place on October 12, 2015.
