A lightweight from Stöcklin that saves energy

Stöcklin has developed the BOXer SE automatic small parts storage system for small parts storage. With its lightweight construction, it is specially designed for smaller warehouses. Energy can be saved thanks to a sleep mode. Vertical carousels such as paternosters or lift systems make very good use of the available space in terms of height. This also makes them interesting from an economic point of view. However, this type of solution has its limits. A characteristic feature of carousels that work according to the "goods-to-man" principle is a high compression of the storage area with the hoped-for short picking paths and access times. However, this does not always work in practice. "The larger the overall system becomes, or the number of lifts used in parallel increases, the more this provisioning process is undermined. The picking personnel have to search for the goods at the individual stations," says Christian Kuner, Head of SRM/KTG at Stöcklin. He has often encountered this situation in practice. The philosophies are mixed up, routes and order throughput times increase and picking performance decreases.

Storage lift, paternoster or BOXer SE?

If it becomes necessary to integrate several storage lifts side by side, the costs for acquisition and operation also add up. This raises the question of the return on investment time and time again. The calculation does not always add up. In the worst case, the solution may even turn out to be an unprofitable bad investment. It doesn't help that the available space appears to be used in the best possible way. In Christian Kuner's experience, the use of a BOXer SE usually pays off from the fourth or fifth lift or from around 1,500 containers compared to rotating shelves. "With the BOXer SE, the goods-to-man principle, which is convenient for employees, is consistently ensured even with growing systems. Thanks to the 'single point of access', picking performance only decreases very slightly," emphasizes the intralogistics expert. He recalls that the first two orders for the BOXer SE were preceded by decisions against storage lifts and paternoster systems. In terms of performance and cost efficiency, the Smart Edition of the BOXer series was convincing.

70 percent lighter

BOXer SE
An alternative to the storage lift or paternoster: the BOXer SE pays for itself from around 1,500 containers.

Thanks to its lightweight design, the BOXer SE is up to 70 percent lighter than conventional small parts appliances. The lightweight small parts appliance is also a real energy saver. Thanks to Stöcklin's integrated energy management, energy savings of up to 45 percent can be expected. This is made possible by intelligent axis control, DC link coupling, energy storage and energy recovery, among other things.

Switch on "sleep mode" and save energy

If full power is not always required, operators can simply put the BOXer SE into "sleep mode" temporarily. This can save up to 1,600 kWh of electricity or 1,000 kilograms of harmful CO2 emissions per year. By way of comparison, the energy saved is enough to run a refrigerator for 120 days.

The BOXer SE has proven itself in practice thanks to its high delivery readiness, guaranteed availability of over 99% and dynamics that can be adapted to daily requirements. The system also offers user-friendly accessibility, making it easy to rectify faults. Almost all components can be replaced quickly and safely "en bloc".

Tailor-made for small warehouses

The Boxer SE unit was specially designed for smaller warehouses, for example 40 meters long and 12 meters high. To save weight, components that were not directly required were practically banned from the small parts unit and mounted on the mainland side. The mass to be moved was reduced and many components could be made slimmer and therefore more cost-effective. The newly developed BOXer SE is more than 40 percent lighter and around 20 percent cheaper than its comparable predecessor. It is the lightest and therefore also the most energy-efficient small parts appliance in its performance class. It features state-of-the-art technology and is exemplary in terms of accessibility and ease of maintenance.

The automatic small parts storage system is characterized by its lightweight design. To save weight, components that are not directly required have been removed from the small parts unit.

At the same time, the smart further development of the BOXer series offers cost-cutting potential that can no longer be tapped using carousels once a certain point or a certain system size has been reached: There is no tedious and time-consuming searching in the course of order picking. The workers thus gain valuable time for their actual productive work.

Ideal for container warehouses with up to 8,000 storage spaces per aisle

The possible versions of this technology are also extremely diverse. The BOXer SE automatic small parts storage system is suitable for handling both containers and trays or delicate cartons. The classic double-deep version was designed to hold two containers (L600 × W400) at the same time, each weighing up to 50 kilograms. As an option, Stöcklin Logistik offers a quadruple-deep version for parallel handling of four containers (L300 × W400), each weighing 25 kilograms. In addition to these combination telescopic tables, carton grippers are also used as load handling devices. The dimensions are also flexible: the BOXer SE can be used to create container storage systems with a capacity of between 1,000 and 8,000 storage locations per aisle. Their length can vary between ten and 60 meters and their height between four and 14 meters.
