Doubling of storage capacities

Martin Schrüfer,

Würth relies on TGW again

The German electronics specialist Würth Elektronik eiSos is mirroring its existing facility and doubling its capacity. TGW completed the first order in 2014 and implemented an automated logistics center at the company's headquarters in Waldenburg, which went into operation in 2016. Another order was recently signed: TGW will double the capacity of the intralogistics system by February 2020.

The reason for the expansion at Würth Elektronik eiSos is the strong growth of recent years. The group of companies based in Baden-Württemberg is one of the largest European manufacturers of electronic and electromechanical components and impresses with high growth rates. The electronics specialist operates 17 production sites and employs 6,700 people.

Basis for growth in the coming years

The shuttle warehouse will have six additional aisles, of which only three will be equipped in the first stage. The rest will serve as a reserve for future expansion. In addition, ten new picking and eleven packing workstations will be created. TGW also supplies KingDrive conveyor technology for cartons and totes including Commander control and Warehouse Control System.

The expansion is intended to lay the foundation for growth in the coming years. When mirroring the existing system, the interfaces in particular require special attention. All interventions and adaptations must be carried out outside of operating hours; only limited time windows are available for a shutdown.

"The fact that Würth Elektronik eiSos is once again relying on TGW as a partner for such a large expansion is a great sign of trust and a great confirmation of our work," says Christoph Wolkerstorfer, CSO of the TGW Logistics Group. "The scalable design was already a key criterion for relying on TGW's expertise for the first order. The current project already takes into account a possible third expansion stage from 2023." In order to be able to use as many identical parts as possible and thus positively influence the total cost of ownership, the components used are based on the 2014 solution.

The availability of all parts from stock is crucial for the concept of customer orientation cultivated at Würth Elektronik eiSos, which goes far beyond what is customary in the industry - "more than you expect" is the company's motto. "We are very satisfied with TGW's work and the system has proven itself - also in view of the fact that our company policy causes an extremely high number of withdrawals from the warehouse: We send free component samples to developers and there is no minimum order quantity for us," explains Thorsten Rollbühler, project manager for the warehouse expansion at Würth Elektronik eiSos. "TGW provides us with a system that grows with us so that our logistics center can continue to meet our high standards."
